Default How to get or renew a State Issued ID

Hi all,
As per Ian's post, I understand that travel within the states could be fine if I have a state issued ID.

I do have one, becuase I previously was on an H1B but it's now expired. How can I renew it? I will shortky be submitting paperwork for AOS.

Thanks

jm,

What is the ID? What are the requirements for it? Do you currently meet those requirements?

As for Ian's post, which one are you referring to?

Regards, JEff

You'll have to check with your State (usually the DMV), to find out what they require to renew a State ID.

You might need some kind of combination of the following: SSN, unexpired I-94, unexpired visa, unexpired EAD, proof of residency in your state....for starters.

State issued ID: Drivers licence or non drivers photo ID.

Well this is why I asked. Since I don't have an unexpired I-94 nor an unexpired work permit - how do I renew the one I have? Can I do it somehow after I submit the immigration paperwork?

Since these are state-specific questions, there is no way to answer. Look up the paperwork requirements for your DMV.

You need to look up the requirements for your state, as each state has different requirements.

In your case right now, you *might* have to wait until you have your EAD, so you have something issued by USCIS with a definitive expiration date on it. You can always just go in with your current ID, explain your situation, and see what they tell you.

You can travel within the US on your passport too - just needs to be a photo ID.

You can actually travel without an ID, although your mileage may vary depending on whether or not the TSA are able to verify your identity.

See this blog for example.

Note, however, that this particular person was a US citizen who could provide information about where they had lived in the US at various times.
