How Far Back Do Immigration Records Go

I know that I've always said that and have urged people to make up comprehensive binders of submitted paperwork for each step of the immigration process up to and including naturalization. It has always been my layperson's thought that if something gets fouled up, you are the one that will need to fix it and shouldn't rely on the government agency to have your docs in good order.
