How to correctly gain an ITIN no for dependant
Hi everyone,
So its been a while since I've come into the States now. Still trying to handle the chaos of paperwork. I'm currently trying to gain a Tax Id no for my 4 year old son who is a dependant on my E2 Visa. The reason being is because I want to get medical insurance for him, for that to happen he has to either have a Social Security No or an ITIN (Individual Tax Identification No). He cannot get a Social as he is not allowed to work in the United States he can get a ITIN however they are asking for my tax returns. My question is how can I provide a tax returns if I have not even been here for 4 months? There are exceptions where I have to prove I have a business tax withholding account from my bank, which means getting a letter stating I am eligible to with hold tax, however the bank letter I have is very vague and it just states I have an account with them and the balance on the business account, nothing about tax withholding! Im not sure what to do and I need to get my soon covered soon as he also has allergies. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you Bhav |

The insurance company should be able to use another number (maybe passport number) as a placeholder until you can get the ITIN.

Yep, you file a tax return. For me it was getting the return from the accountants then make an appointment at the local IRS office. I had to take my 3 year old with me, with her passport. You complete the ITIN application and the IRS attach this to the front of your tax return. That all gets sent off together.
