Hope everyone filed their taxes...

Snipes apologised, saying: "I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance."
No finance degree - therefore I don't have to file?!

First off, tax rebates are ridiculous, and anybody who sees them as some sort of "lottery win" or "government gift" is a financial idiot. If anything, you should balance out at zero each year, or maybe even owe a little. Getting a rebate simply means you've been paying too much tax all year and the Government has been using and spending your money all year round a la interest free loan.
Secondly, prison for tax evasion is ridiculous. I thought the original idea behind prison was to lock up and isolate dangerous people so as to prevent them from interactig with innocent civillians to whom they may pose a threat. IE serial killers, rapists, etc.
To imprison people and spend tax payers money locking up people who didnt pay a tax, a fine, a credit card bill is pathetic. Give them community service, fine them, take away some priveleges by all means. But jail? That's going too far.

LOL....I hope that was sarcasm.
I usually balance out each year. People will tease me about how they are getting a big "paycheck" to blow on something, but they don't seem to understand that it's only their own money coming back to them. Technically no different to saving a dollar a day in a piggy bank and being "amazed" that there's a "free" $365 at the end of the ear. It's just your own money that you've been living without for the past year. It'd make more sense to put the same tax difference into a high interest account and pull it out each April.

I wonder if he'll ever do actual time, or whether it'll just become some form of community service?

The difference is that if you gave that money to people on a monthly basis, th vast majority of them would spend it on crap rather than saving it.

actually, the best reason to have filed is that the "rebate" cheques are going out early. As in starting next week -- through June/July.
