Re: Hoffage’s N400 thread
I'm sorry, yes I did mean that it might help Hoffage, as I also thought it would take longer going by the USCIS timelines.
I realise every local office is different and should have said that.
Both myself and son filed by mail, they received the applications within 2 days of mailing.
Edited to add that we mailed the applications to Dallas,Texas as we live in NY state.

UPDATE: Biometric Interview is this Monday!

Excellent. Just a minor note: biometrics is not an interview - they establish who you are, take fingerprints, take photo, and that's about it as far as you're concerned. Small chat is a bonus! IIRC I said 12 minutes in and out. Ignoring waiting time I think my interview a few weeks later was about 20-30 minutes, most of which was him doing paperwork and typing.

Thanks Geoff - well it's good to know it won't take too long (I am working at home in the morning, then afternoon, as I don't have much annual leave).
Another update: I realized that I had forgotten to put some memberships on the N400 - so there is a section called other documentation, where I have uploaded an updated list. I thought it better to be transparent as possible, don't want to get citizenship denied for a silly reason like forgetting I donated to the ACLU last year! My original immigrant visa processing was fairly quick (3.5 months), so I am hoping that there won't be a significant delay for the N400.

Well I'm right there with you now, submitted my N-400 online this morning (5 years as PR of course) - although I will have a longer wait then you will according to the processing times...

Do you need to have lived in the US for 5 years, or needed to have lived in the US and been a permanent resident for 5 years?

The answer is here:
https://www.uscis.gov/us-citizenship...naturalization
You can naturalize if you are married to a US Citizen after three years as a Permanent Resident and your marriage must be three years in length with at minimum 18 months in the US during those three years with no absence outside of the US of than one year continuously. If you are outside of the US for 6 to 12 months it might reset the clock.
If you are not married to a USC, then it is 5 years as a permanent resident and no cumulative absence of more than 30 months of those five years. Again if you are outside of the US for more than 6 months to one year, the clock might be reset.
The N-400 can be filed 90 days prior to the 5 year or 3 year requirements.

Jeez, it feels like everyone's is moving but mine! Filed and had biometrics in Nov/Dec 2017. Still says 6 months waiting time left (San Fernando processing center in CA). I told myself I'd just forget about it but that's hard to do
