Help please! F-1 out-of-status.
 

Hey folks,

I am a PhD student at NY will graduate in Dec 2007. But last week when I went to graduate school to apply for OPT I found that my F1 visa is out-of-status. The following events that cause me out-of-status: in June 2007 I applied for OPT starting from August 2007. And they changed my I-20 expired date therefore. But I didn't mail out the OPT application in time and totally forget it. Thanks for my frustrating dissertation writing. Now I passed the defense and start thinking about OPT but suddenly found out that I am out-of-status. So I can't not apply for OPT again!

The international advisor did give me two advises. One is to apply for reinstatement. But since I will graduate at about DEC 20, I may not get the approved in time to apply for OPT anyway. Another is finding an academic job and leave US and then re-entry by H1B.

So what I am gonna do now? Do I have no chance to get OPT? No chances seeking an industrial job? Do I have to leave and then re-entry by H1B?

Any advices? Thanks a lot in advance.

Not sure you have enough details there to answer the question, but another option would be to push back the graduation date.
