Hi , I am an international grad student about to graduate in May, and my Optional
Practical Training (OPT) is set to begin in June. But unfortunately, I have no job
offers yet, and in this bear market, it could be a while before I can get one. What
will be my legal status in such a situation? Can I sit at home and keep looking for
jobs? Am I violating INS dictat that they gave me an OPT for working, not for
looking for work? For how long can I keep looking for work during the OPT <and
basically stay idle>?

Thanks in advance!

MEP: F-1

Can I sit at home and

MEP: Yes.

Am I violating INS dictat that they gave me an OPT

MEP: Nol.

For how long can I keep looking for

MEP: Til your OPT expires. After that you can apply to change your status to B-2 and
stay even longer looking for work. Hopefully you will find it and apply for H-1B.

My comments are based upon my over 15 years of full time experience as an immigration
