Since you already have a degree and are talking about going back to uni, have you looked into doctoral degrees? That might provide a relatively short-term investment (3 years, 4 if you need to do a masters first) that would give you not only an advanced degree but potentially good networking opportunities with people in high positions in the US.

Don't go that route. Don't alter your life on the off-chance that at some point in the future, it'll help you get a visa. Do what seems interesting to you. If it helps you get a visa, great... if it doesn't, c'est la vie!

However, if you insist... forensic science (computer forensics, DNA analysis, etc) will be in high demand in the future.

Really?

Down here, where I am and I know only because it made the news, was how things like CSI made it all very popular that there was such a influx of graduates that had studied those things that there were 960 odd graduates over the last few years competing for about 15 positions in the state.

Though I'm sure there's probably more private labs in other parts of the country etc.

Not so sure about CIMA anymore - my OH is CIMA qualified and a couple of months ago he had some stuff come from the Institute announcing a tie up with the CPAs out here. There's a new qualification that the two of them have come up with. CIMAs get it automatically, CPAs have to do some extra papers. I'm sure it will take time for it to work its way to wide recognition, but at least it's there now.

For an L1 - work for an American company that has an office / manufacturing plant / etc in the UK. Put a few years in, and keep an eye open for transfer opportunities. Look for larger companies (Caterpillar, Walmart (ASDA), Heinz, Ford, ExxonMobil, JP Morgan Chase etc) as they will be more prepared for the transfer and Visa process.

It is possible, my SIL worked for Asda in the HO in Leeds, she was offered a transfer to the US, it was to Bentonville though
