Harsh denial of visa extention

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/24774753/detail.html

The woman is currently IN status but wanted to renew her and her terminally ill daughters visas while she is in hospital. The visa for the daughter WAS renewed but the mothers wasnt!

but it seems they had a change of heart the next day and gave her 3 months more.

From the first link:

"A family attorney said they might meet the requirements for a medical visa, but time is not on their side."

What is a "medical visa"?

A B variant.

Wonder how they are paying the bills...

the article said they had valid insurance - maybe that covers it?

That sort of detail is usually suspect.

I find it difficult to believe any non US Insurer would pay to send a terminally ill patient to the US.

The bill so far must be in the millions.

There is such a thing as a Humanitarian visa. Maybe this is what they are meaning?

There is no specific humanitarian visa per se. A visa can be granted or status can be extended for humanitarian reasons and there is such a thing as humanitarian parole.

I am also skeptical that the taxpayer isn't on the hook for the lion's share of this treatment, but that's par for the course. The US is the emergency and delivery room for the world.

Whoaaa

The UK does its share, I seem to remember that more than half of NHS spending in London was for Health Tourists.

We'll thumb wrestle for the title. I haven't lived in the US for a few years nd medical is quite different. One time, my son was admitted to a local hospital/clinic. In this country, they charge your credit card before they start the IV line but the entire bill was about $700 for an overnight. I would have had him flown back to the US if it got dicey though.
