Hi

I'll be moving in a few wks time to Washington and will also be on a H4

Not a happy bunny at the moment so do read my post with caution...as we get closer to our move date the whole H4 thing is really getting to me, especially coz I've had a zero response to the several jobs that I've applied for in 3 states (VA, Washington DC, MD). For the background, I left uni in 2004 and after have been working without a gap since 2006. I've worked incredibly hard in the last 2yrs as I completed a part-time MBA alongside a full time job and now I just feel that all this hard work is a waste!

I really am not a stage to take a 4yr career break (duration of my OH's job contract) and it's so frustrating to see so many jobs that I am qualified and experienced to do but looks like won't be offered it coz I believe most US employers are very reluctant to sponsor pple for H1b?

I guess the only thing is that I'm 3mnths pregnant so I'll be pretty busy for at least the nxt 1.5yrs! And, If I am out of a job for more than 1.5yrs I'll be heading bck home!

Your education certainly isn't a waste - it is forever! But I understand how you feel. When my partner got his H1B in 2005 I choose to stay where I was rather then move on a H4 (Not an option for you I understand). I had a great job, well paid and didn't feel at the point where I had the specialist skills and experience to convince an employer to go through the H1b. I applied and received many job offers but the visa was always the breakpoint. Once you get here and start networking and meeting people you will find yourself in a better position to get employed - US address and available for interview etc.. Also get your CV redrafted into US format.
Now in 2011, my now husband is on an O1 and I finally moved here 7 months ago and am on O3 (similar to a H4). I am studying and getting more US qualifications (I work in Alternative Investments) and will resume the job search later next year. I have made some very good contacts through LinkedIn.
I am loving my time as a "dependant".

Congratulations on the baby - yes I am sure you will be very busy! As you'll be in DC I am sure there will be a few intellectual/educational issues you could get involved with and therefore meet people/potential contacts and keep up your outside interests. There are lots of groups you could get involved with - meetup.com is a great resource and also join Young Business Womens groups - you dont have to be working. I joined several groups and have met some cool people.
Have fun - it is a great adventure
