Default H1B renewal/extension and travelling out of country (expired I94)

My 1st H1B is expiring in about 2 months. Naturally, my I94 will
expire at the same time. My company lawyers will put the application
for extension/renewal soon.

Here is my question: I understand that i can work for another ~200
days or so after my application is received. However, my I94 shows
the same expiration. Is there a simple way to get that
updated/renewed or do I have to wait until my H1B is renewed?

The reason is that I travel to Canada often to visit and for business.
(I'm from Canada originally). I may also need to fly to other
countries for business.

If I cannot renew my I94, I will have to go for the "expressed renewal
application" for $1000 extra....

-------------- your employer has to file H1 extension BOFORE the I-94 gets expired and you will get new I-94 attached with your H1 approval notice. once the H1 extension is filed with USCIS you can work even if I-94 gets expired. H1 extensionis taking 3-5 months at this time if you need the results in 15-20 days file the H1 extension with premium processing

First, you need to make sure that your H-1B extension is filed before your current H-1B expires. If you do properly file before the expiration, you are allowed to work past the expiration of your currnet I-94 for 240 days.

You cannot travel, however, after your current H-1B expires until the new approval notice arrives. Well, you can travel, but you have no status to return to the U.S. until your new H-1B is approved.

If you need to travel, you should consider utilizing premium processing.

Andrew
