Default Greencard

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all staying safe during the current situation we are all experiencing.

I'm in the process of obtaining my Greencard. I have 5 months to enter the US once my immigrant visa is issued and I will be become a lawful permanent resident. My Greencard will then arrive to a US address within 4-5 months.

My question is, can I physically enter the US within the 5 months from when my immigrant visa is issued, become a lawful permanent resident and then leave the US? I would returning to the UK to finalise things.

Thanks.

Yes, quite permissible. Have a safe place/address to use to have the green card mail to and for yourself, the I-551 in your passport is your paper green card for traveling.

Yes, just be sure not to stay outside the USA too long. A few months should be fine. And as Rete said, make sure you have a US address.

it's not necessarily 5 months to enter the USA. It's 6 months from the date of the medical exam.

How are you obtaining the immigrant visa and thence green card? Via employment or marriage (or DV)?
If it is by marriage your spouse must either already be in the USA when you enter using your immigrant visa OR accompany you when you enter.
