Why limit your search to one area? Immigration law is federal, and your
lawyer can be located anywhere in the US. Communication is done by email,
phone, fax, FedEx anyway.

With Joe's suggestion, I just called a law office in the city where I
used to live because it's hard to get hold of the one I went for
consultation here and basically decided to hire him for my GC
application - because mine is not that complicated.

I knew that the lawyer I called out of state is really good and last
time I asked (in 2001 or 2002), he charged $200 for consultaion.

Now, I just wanted to give him the case by fisrt finding the price for
it. The secretary transferred me to talk with him. As I explained to
him that *when* my priority date will be processed and that I prefer
to make sure everything is filed properly rather than doing myself, he
told me to send my papers along with $1000 check and that he would
review the situation and gives me options to choose. I asked him
whether $1000 would cover his handling of my GC application process.
He said "no" and repeated what he told me about options. Realizing
that he could be referring to AoS versus CP, I let him know that I
have decided to do AoS. All he said to write that in my letter when I
send the stuff.

I didn't even bother to ask how much he would charge for handling GC
application since I knew he would only say it would depend on what
options I choose blah..blah..after he reviewed my case and gives me
options.

I feel like I will be chraged $1000 consultation fees instead of $200
(or $300 so if he raised it since then) because I am not in the same
city. may eb he think that should be his rate in this state.

So I decided to contact Imigration Help Clinic of a local law school.
I trust that these students would do a good job in helping me file
everything I need to file. They are not taking new client in the
summer. So I will have to call and see ..to get an appt....in August.
They did give me another phone number for "Legal Services for *state
name*".

If you live in Columbus, Ohio, isn't there a law school in town? I
would go to them. I wish I had gone to a similar place last time I
went to an expensive lawyer who made his assitant (no law degree from
US) handled my case, which didn't get anywhere. It would have costed
more if he handled it but he didn't tell me that his assitant was not
a lawyer. It was such a lousy job.

Anyway, this thought of going to law school just occured to me today.
I also have another scenario I want to ask their opinion. I can't wait
for that one and so my search continues ...
