Just somewhere that will manage my money without imposing too many charges, with decent customer service when I have to ring them up - ie people who a)pick up the phone and b) speak understandable English and a good online service. Oh, and I really want to open it before I leave the UK (I want to transfer money whilst exchange rates are so high).
If exchange rates are the issue, why not open a UK-based dollar account? Then, when you get to the US and open an account, make a transfer from your UK-based dollar account and Bob's your uncle.
