Canadian Politicians Denouncing 'Conan'
Tue Feb 17,11:28 AM ET

By COLIN McCLELLAND, Associated Press Writer

TORONTO - Canadian politicians are denouncing "The Late Show with
Conan O'Brien" over a sketch in which a cigar-chomping sock puppet
hurled insults at French Canadians.

A

The NBC show came to Toronto last week with the help of $750,000 in
Canadian taxpayers' money, a trip that Canadian promoters hoped would
help rebuild the city's tourist industry after an outbreak of severe
acute respiratory syndrome last year.

In the pre-taped skit that aired Thursday night, Triumph the Insult
Comic Dog confronted visitors to Quebec City's Winter Carnival.

When one couple confirmed they were French Canadian separatists, the
grouchy puppet said, "Listen closely. Hear that? It's the sound of no
one giving a," followed by an expletive bleep.

"You're in North America, learn the language!" he hollered at another.

Triumph asked a rotund man if he was a separatist, then suggested he
might want to separate himself from doughnuts for a while. The skit
also replaced street signs with insulting replicas, including one that
mocked Canadian singer Celine Dion (news).

Mauril Belanger, the deputy government house leader, told the House of
Commons Friday that the government was not amused. He said Ottawa
completely dissociated itself from the material.

Alexa McDonough, a member of Parliament for the New Democratic Party,
said the sketch was "vile and vicious" and amounted to hate-mongering.
McDonough said the government should demand its money back.

"The whole point of trying to help deal with the devastation of the
SARS (news - web sites) crisis on the city of Toronto was to attract
tourists," McDonough said. "How it got morphed into this kind of
garbage I don't know."

Chum Television, which airs the show in Canada, issued an apology and
removed the segment in a repeat broadcast.

"It is never our intention to air programming that offends any of our
viewers," the network said.

NBC has declined comment, and O'Brien mentioned the topic only in
passing in his monologue during the taping of the final Toronto show
on Friday afternoon.

Guest Jim Carrey (news), a Canadian, later offered O'Brien a subtle
opportunity to apologize by bringing on the mascot for the winter
carnival, but O'Brien didn't take the bait.

Separatism and French language rights are a sensitive issue in Canada,
especially after Quebec separatists nearly won a 1995 referendum to
set up their own country.

Canada's current government is immersed in a scandal over allegations
that Quebec advertising agencies were paid $75 million in illegal
commissions to confront the separatist threat.

"It's wrong to spread the worst possible ethnic prejudices about
Quebecers, which already exist in Canada," said Jean Dorion, president
of the Quebec nationalist Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society.

But businessman Peter Soumalias, said who helped bring the New
York-based show to Toronto, said Canadians were taking the show too
seriously.

"It's a silly puppet that tells silly jokes," Soumalias said. "Most
people find it funny."

Why don't canadian politicians work on fixing the country -- instead of watching late night TV? That's the job of the millions of unemployed over-taxed Canadians.

French Canadians are insulted by everyone. They would do the whole country a favor if they just packed up and left.

The reason Canadian politicians don't do anything is because most of the leaders come from Quebec!

I wonder why most of the leaders come from Quebec? That'd be harsh if all
the good guys had to leave the country! Isn't there anyway other provinces
provide leaders as well?

Man! Quebec sounds better and better everytime I read some posts from people
such as you! Can't wait to see the faces of those people that scare you like
this!

Come on up! We accept US visitors. Your dollar will get you more warmth than it
will in the USA. Get to know some French culture - after all, they GAVE the USA
the Statue of Liberty.
Shrwed business people that they are, they were not at all upset that the US
last spring summer were dumping fine French wine etc into toilets and sewers.
Bother them?? Hell no, the US paid for the wine and since it is not US property
it can be used for whatever they wish.

Come to another quite country and see where your petroleum comes from (through
terrorist proof (so far) pipelines and where your electricity imports come from.

For those so inclined you can hunt elk. The government extended the season
because there are so many elk and they were not hunted in adequate numbers.
Organic meat now in season. How about walleye? Right now if they are 18" to 23"
you have to throw them back. Otherwise, no problem.

Come on up and forget road rage and crowded bars. Beer is 4.6% and you don't
have to drink Moosehead as we figure that stuff should only go south of the 49th

Triumph insults everyone. I love that dog!

Instead of laughing along with it -- and being good sports. They start whining. God those politicians are embarassing Canadians around the world.

Think about it -- it's Triump the ****INSULT**** comic dog! What were they expecting???

I know what's insulting. 15% sales tax. How's that?

I'm glad to see that we have some 12 year olds, that appreciate
that type of humor, participating in this group.

This was all brought about because the french in Quebec complained.
They also complained loudly recently when Don Cherry a hockey
commentator called the french players, french guys. There is more to
this story but the point is that the french are becoming very vocal
and everyone is canada are sick of hearing from them. And the
scandal..it was more like 250 million but the french x prime minister
of canada has probably wasted and lost more than 2 billion of hard
earned canadian money. He is an embarrassment to this country and I
feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with him. BTW, there is no love
lost between the east and the west in this country.

Very true. I grew up in Alberta. But it still doesn’t negate the fact that Chretien was elected THREE times as Prime Minister (even though his party often got less than 40% of the vote). And don’t forget, Quebeckers did not vote for him either!

So, yes, Quebec has always been a vocal annoyance, but most of the problem is elsewhere.

I find it interesting that most of Canada’s Prime Ministers have always been from Quebec; the rest of the country never got proper representation.
