Foreign income - necessary proof/paperwork?
Hi all ...
Does anyone know if one has to request 1099-DIV forms from UK companies/banks or if the original tax certificate from the dividend payment is sufficient?
Thanks for any help. Jill

I doubt any UK institution is going to give you a 1099. My $0.02 report the
income and attach a copy of whatever UK document best summarizes that
income, or write a note explaning that it's 1099 income but the UK
institution doesn't issue a 1099-DIV
US companies issue you a 1099 and also report that information to the IRS.
When you file a tax return with income that doesn't include that 1099 income
the IRS will ultimately become aware of the discrepancy. Overseas
corporations are not required to notify the IRS of payments to you and
therefore don't send to a 1099.
I ran an overseas company which hired US contractors. We didn't issue 1099's
to them, but informed them to talk to thier accountants (who would
invariably tell them they were obliged to report the income although no
matching 1099 would be present for it).
