Depends on the year you were born. I was born of a German Citizen mother and USC father (service) before they were married. After WWII at one point a serviceman was not allow to marry until he mustered out of the service. So dad and mom married after my birth and I was not given USC until I had become legitimate in the eyes of the US Government on their marriage. You might find the same thing with you.

I'm 46 and like I said earlier, didn't get to meet my dad until I was 40 years old. His name is on my birth certificate but it seems that that is no help either!
The embassy told me that the absence of written 'proof' before I was 18 years of age stops me from becoming a citizen. this rule does not apply to all nations though.
