Default A favour please?..

Hi peeps.

As an avid genealogist, can I please ask all you residents or expatriates of the UK to sign a petition against a price increase in BMD certificates from the UK?

Yeah - I know it may not be effective, but I have to at least try. Doing nothing will definitely achieve nothing.

It costs 7.00 GPB currently, but is set to rise to 9.25 per certificate very soon. Research has been done and shows their actual cost is, at a maximum, 2.00 GBP each at the the moment, so they are already making 5 pounds profit per certificate from us researchers. This is a huge increase and is ridiculous. I have already spent a small fortune on BMD's myself and need lots more yet (as do many other researchers, a lot of whom are ancient like me - or retired and on low or fixed incomes).

Thanks in advance for your help

Beapons of Mass Destruction. They don't really exist...

(Edited to add: I'm guessing it's Births, Marriages and Deaths)

(Re-edited to add: I think the "grocertificates" in the URL is nothing to do with Edward Heath and his "tificates," but is probably a contraction of Government Records Office Certificates.)

I didn't know they were going up - thanks for the heads up. I've bought a few, and felt that the price was fair. I will read the petition you linked to, but doubt if I will sign. £9.25 still doesn't sound too bad to me. While the actual service you are getting may only cost about £2.00, it seems reasonable that the GRO should make money on these type of services in order to help pay for their whole operation, in times of financial stringency.
