F1 withdrawing from college
F1 student withdrawing from college at the end of semester and unlikely to return for a.year. how long does he have to get out of the country and can he return on esta for holidays.thx

As long as it takes to pack his stuff and leave. Shouldn't take long, right?

Does it need to be the same day school closes. He is in an apartment not campus, have furniture etc to dispose of.

No. He is allowed a reasonable time to leave... but there's no definition of the word "reasonable". Some people suggest 10 days, some 30 days. I think two weeks is reasonable. That said, if his visa is stamped "D/S" that means it's unlikely that anyone from US immigration is ever going to come looking for him.
If it's in reasonably good shape, he can donate the furniture to Goodwill - in fact, they'll pick it up.
