Hi:
Any past experiences or advise will be helpful.
I'm a 5th yr PhD student, graduating in 2007. My I20 is valid till
May'07. My visa, however, expired this year (Jun'06).
I am flying to India (my home country) in Dec'06 to present a paper at
a conference. I need a new visa to re-enter US in Dec'06. I have a visa
renewal appointment with US embassy in vancouver in Oct'06. I could not
find suitable appointment dates in India, as they are blocked out till
March'07.
Does anybody know about F1 visa processing in vancouver? Is it a good
idea to go to canada for F1? How much of a risk is it in vancouver?
Since I am close to graduation, a visa refusal will cause delays in
graduating, and hence the worry. In the event of visa refusal, does one
have 30 days to leave US, or re-entry not allowed, period?
Thanks!
Vimal

Hi,
I believe F1 visas have to be done in the home country and the
vancouver embassy mainly does work visas. So, my advise is to not go to
canada. But again, I am not experienced enough, and would wait to see
what others have to say.

Vancouver is in Canada, not the United States. It is amazing that people tend to forget that.

We are having the same situation: Ph.d students, Visa expired and I-20 expiring in May 2007. Now, i want to have a new visa stamp.
Although i am a resident of Canada, the Office of International students (OIS) of my University did not recommend me to go to Canada to have my visa stamped because there is a risk that the visa officer could ask me to prove ties to Canada such as bank account, rent lease. I do not have these because i have not established residency yet (I mean i have the residency card but i have not lived there yet. Only one month when i waited for my card).
Now, if you risk it and still go to Canada for a visa and let'say you are denied, you CANNOT come back to the USA using the Visa Automatic Revalidation privilege. you take advantage of this visa revalidation ONLY
- if you do not stay over 30 days in Canada and
- If you did NOT apply for a US visa in Canada and
- if are NOT from certain countries (as natives of certain countries do not benefit from this visa revalidation).
Of course, you can always go to Canada and apply. Either you get it (chances are slim) or you do not. if you do not, you cannot enter USA under the Visa Automatic Revalidation. Therefore you have to go back to your country and apply for the visa over there. Do not forget by applying again in India, you will be telling them in the application that you were denied a US visa in Canada.
In my case, i will go to my country and save all the trouble as it will be easy for me to prove ties to my country as i have a job pending and other stuff.
PLEASE IF YOU DECIDE TO DO YOUR VISA IN VANCOUVER AND YOU GET IT, PLEASE REPORT HERE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE OR SEND ME A PM. THANK YOU
Yasmina

Hi Yasmina,
Sorry, I decided not to go to Canada. I got a visa appointment in
India. I thought it was not worth taking the risk of being denied a
visa in Canada.
A tip: Dates were not available in Dec. But after trying for a few
days, a suitable date showed up. So, check persistently. I know, it's a
pain in the neck!
Thanks,
Vimal
