Default F-1 to TN

First of all, I'd like to thank you for any help and advice you could
give me.

I am a Canadian Citizen currently looking for a job in the US. I
graduated in May 2002 with a BA degree and my OPT expired on Jan
9,2003. I was wondering how long I can stay in the US legally after
my OPT expired. If I find a job in the US and am qualify for the TN
visa, is there anyway I could get it without having to drive to the
border? I've lived here for quite sometime now and this is like my
home. It's very difficult for me to move back to canada. I would
really love to stay here if it is possible at all. Is there anyway I
could stay here legally while looking for a job? Big thanks for all
your help!

You can file a change of status to TN without leaving the US, but it may
not be a wise decision. The problem is that such a change of status can
take a long time, while going to the border would get you a TN
instantaneously.

Incidentally, you should also be able to go to Mexico instead of Canada if
that border is closer (although I recommend Canada; they are more familiar
with the procedure for Canadians, which is different from the procedure
for Mexicans). Of course, you can also fly or take a ship ;-)
