Re: examination of external genitalia for green card?!!
My theory is that doctors with the most experience doing immigration medicals do the least invasive tests. After all, they know that most of them are bollocks (pardon the pun) and totally unnecessary.
By contrast, a doctor who has done none or very few will most likely read the list of required tests and follow each one to the letter.
I can't help thinking that the doctor who was pulling back foreskins had no f***ing clue what he was supposed to be doing, like so many of the medical profession in this country.

Well that's all we needed - a doctor being arrested close to home! Now everyone will probably be extra-thorough. Admittedly he went a bit too far not examining anything at all, but I can't imagine why anyone would complain about not getting their money's worth! As long as my dd doesn't have to strip we'll be ok.

I wonder if the genital exam is also to look for some sexually transmitted, communicable disease of public health significance?
Whatever's the reason, it's a part of the exam that's uncomfortable for almost everyone, and worse if you personally know the physician. Better find someone that you have little or no chance of ever seeing again!

Yes, as far as I know it is for checking for STDs. We are in the process of choosing a doctor now and trying to decide whether age or sex of doctor will influence thoroughness of the exam!

My recommendation is to look for a doctor based on Price. I have booked 2 different doctors this way for PR exam (one for me, one for my parents 5 years later ) and we got the cheapest rate they would admit to on the phone, AND no genital examination.
Good Luck !

This NEVER happened to me. My exam was a series of questions about drink/smoking/drug use, my and my families medical history (any history of cancer, etc) and then they took blood pressure, checked my chest with a stethoscope. After that they drew blood for the HIV/Syphilis/TB test, and that was it.
Unless I've repressed the memory, the doc didn't ask to have a look at my knob...

i had my medical done late 2008. I had to get into a gown and they did all the normal blood pressure stuff etc. The examination of external genitalia was simply the doc lifting my gown and peeping in the general vacinity. He said at the time it was a visual examination to see if there were any signs of sexual disease but i guess he was checking i didnt have the meat and two veg part as well.
The whole family had to strip into gowns. the adults went in alone one at a time - but the kids went in with one of us in attendance (they were 2 and 4 years old approx.) The worst part for the kids was my eldest screaming like a banshee when the doc tried to take his blood pressure - he didnt like the squeeze lol.
We chose the biggest local civil surgeon practice on the list we got from the USCIS site as we wanted to be seen as soon as possible. We didnt get told who our appt was with but it ended being a very pleasant chap - late 50s white male. I 'think' the female nurse was present during the visual exam for me - so there could be no complaints of foul play etc - she wasnt there for the rest of the dull stuff. The practice was called Immigration medical associates (or something like that) and obviously specialised ONLY in doing the medicals for immigration needs so it was quite a slick operation.

Well, you've all passed another test in the road to becoming American. You're all uptight about nudity. Welcome aboard.
Personally, I go to the doctor so he can make sure that I am healthy. If he needs to look down there to accomplish that task then he can do so.

Well, that's one way of looking at it. A counterpoint would be that many STDs are asymptomatic, particularly in men. To cite two common ones, Herpes and Chlamydia often do not have visually obvious symptoms (at least not ones that are permanently present) so looking at the three-piece suite would accomplish nothing.

I had my exam done last year. I went in with my girls and my Husband went in with my son. We all had to strip and put gowns on. I really don't think he looked at our genital area - I think I would have remembered I know my Husband and son got checked though.
If you're in Socal and need a recommendation for a doctor feel free to PM me and I'll tell you where I went. Very quick and efficient

While some diseases are detectable visibly, others are not, so Civil Surgeons are directly to do a full exam. Whether they truly do so is another question entirely.
I concur with the poster that said "choose the designated civil surgeon by cost." It is not, after all, as if you will use this person as your permanent GP.

None of that malarkey for any of us when we went for medical back in 2006. I do remember the doctor was a sad-looking cow and also looked as if she'd just come out of drug rehab - obvious chainsmoker, very thin, odd haircut and coke bottle bins. I think she was embarrassed to be there and couldn't get a job anywhere else.
