Default Esta stay duration questions

Hi all,

I have a friend who left for the US on 15th Nov. He has been there under visa waiver and is due to come back to the UK on 12 Feb.

He received an email to make sure he leave within the time period but is right on the edge it seems. aving gone to the CBP site it says:

Looks ok to me but can someone please confirm if he will be OK, or should change his seat to an earlier date now?
Their timezone is MST

Thanks

If it was me I would change my ticket. 89 days is cutting it very close. What if his flight is delayed or cancelled? I personally would leave 5 days earlier to be safe

is it 89 days though? It looks like 90 to me. It's a direct flight and rarely ever gets delayed however I agree its certainly a risk and a risk not worth taking.

There is never any guarantee that a flight won't be delayed and a delay of three hours is nothing in the airline world. So many factors out of his control- not just a basic airline delay, but bad weather at departure or arrival, airport evacuation for a terrorist incident, flight turned around en route for an issue resulting in pax being returned to the US.......
Up to him but personally I'd be moving the flight a couple of days earlier

That's probably what lots of people thought when flights were cancelled all over the place due to the Iceland volcano a few years ago. All it takes is one freak weather incident and flights could be grounded. Not worth risking IMO.

British Airways from Phoenix? Just last night that one was delayed over an hour and didn’t leave until after 10 pm.

There doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem in Phoenix to cause a delay or cancellation. It could be something that happens on the inbound flight from London to Phoenix. This will have a knock-on effect as BA don’t have spare planes sitting in PHX waiting for a problem to happen.

Direct flights don’t often have delays? Spend a few days - no, hours - in my job and you’ll never say that again.

Twinkle0927 has industry experience of this. Her advice is spot on.

Your friend shouldn't risk his VWP future over a stupid 1-2 day overstay if there was issues!

From and including: Wednesday, November 15, 2017
To and including: Monday, February 12, 2018

Result: 90 days

Exactly what I thought when my flight was delayed and then cancelled, rebooked for the same day and then that one was cancelled two weeks ago. The plane could have left the airport I was trapped in but the incoming flight could not get out and if it did, the final destination saw the airport closed because of ice and snow.

It is VWP suicide to book a flight to leave a country on the very last day of your approved stay.

I've also had a flight cancelled from US to UK with the next available being the next day.

At this time of year that is cutting it VERY close.

While unusual, bad weather can close airports for the day which backs up flights for 2 or 3 days. CBP don't care about those sort of occurrences.

I would change the flight to earlier
