Re: Esta
Lots of information to go on here so I will do the assumption bit.
I assume you are a UK citizen but a permanent Resident of Canada who holds a NEXUS card
From the official website
I am a Landed Immigrant of Canada?
If you are a landed immigrant of Canada and a citizen of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), and you enter the U.S. by land, ESTA is not required. If you do not have ESTA, you will be required to complete the paper I-94W form and proceed through a manual entry process at the land border crossing. If you have an approved ESTA when entering the U.S. at a land border crossing, you will not be required to complete the paper I-94W form and your entry process is expedited. If you are coming to the U.S. by air or sea, you DO have to apply for ESTA. If you are not a citizen of a VWP country, you are required to have a visa, and therefore ESTA does not apply to you.
So dependent on how you want to get to the USA the answer is yes and no. Note: VWP citizens do not need an ESTA to travel on the ferries between Vancouver and Victoria, BC and Washington State. They are treated as a land border port.
By land border, train or ferry NO. If by air or cruise ship YES even if transiting the USA.

He's a Canadian citizen; not a landed immigrant. Canadian citizens do not require an ESTA to enter the US.

Re: Esta
Ah but when he posted this initially in the Canadian Immigration forum he did not mention he was a Canadian citizen just that he had a Nexus card. No citizenship of any country mentioned hence my somewhat sarcastic response of guessing on the scant details provided. A PR of Canada still needs one if a UK citizen entering on the VWP via Air or Cruise ship even if in transit. The answer found was via PM from the OP to myself. All is good now.
