Default Electronic Items Now Allowed in London (Feb 10 2014)

I'm informed that the rules have now been eased. No laptops. That's it. Mobiles, key fobs etc no longer on the prohibited list.

I saw a tweet from the USAinUK CG's Corner Twitter account (@USAinUKCGCorner)yesterday, which said something similar.

Good news, I'm due there in a couple of months to get my L1 renewed, looks like iPads are not on the banned list - result! Will make the waiting less tedious, although the pharmacy up the road can't be too happy at the loss of income from storage....

I don't know whether you've checked specifically about iPads, but the banned list I linked to says that's it's not an exhaustive one, so iPads could well still be prohibited.

Hmmm, will be interesting to see if we're allowed to take kindles. Maybe if someone's going there soon they can update us as to what they were allowed to take in

Laptops are still banned - so it might still extend to iPads.

Yet to make my appointment (targeting April) but I will report back, unless others do it sooner and let us know.

Ha! Goulds chemist will be upset! About time common sense prevails.
I went into the Brazil embassy in LA last month and there was no security, no searches just walk in and take an appointment ticket. Getting an appointment is the hardest part.

I can see allowing small devices, but wouldn't think Brazil's setup would work. I can't recall any attacks on Brazil's posts unlike the dozens of attacks and 400 fatalities at US diplomatic missions since 1968.

That's good news, but the thread title suggests all of London! Embassy would have been a good word, or Consular section thereof, for the other pedants.

I knew exactly what the OP meant in the thread title having been there, done that.

I seem to recall that I used the three letter code LND when I posted. It got changed when it was tacked at the top.

But even so, context matters. They still do not allow smoking in the Embassy.

So weird to me that the US embassies/consulates have so much security! In the Maltese consulate you just walk in and speak to the friendly people inside. No security at all, no one is armed, mobiles definitely allowed, laptops too! I was even invited into the Consul's office for a chat...
