Easier Online Case Status Link

I have some good news first. I received the 1st NOA in the mail today for the I-129F petition. YAY!

However, since I am going through the NSC it will probably be a long wait. :-( So, I will be checking the website quite a bit for the next 4 months.

Anyway, I decided to take a peak at the online status webpage, and it seems I have to enter in my receipt number every time I want to check. I can't just bookmark the page with my status on it. Grrr... I'll have that thing memorized 3 times over again if I have to enter it everytime I want to check the status (which could be several times a day ;-) ). So, I did a little poking around in the javascript code and made myself a link to get the information directly. And since I've used this newsgroup SO much in the past month, I thought I would share it with everyone. Here's the link (it should be all on one line with no spaces):

https://egov.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/cris/jsps/caseRes.jsp?appReceiptNum=XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Just replace the XXX's with your receipt number and put it in your browser. Once you've confirmed that it works, you can bookmark it. Remember your number starts with 3 letters and the whole thing is 13 characters long.

I hope you find it useful! :-)

In case anyone else had trouble using this nifty "direct link bookmark" method, I can confirm that it doesn't always work. The method of passing the receipt number to the server program appears to be correct (caseRes.jsp?appReceiptNum=XXXXXXXXXXXXX), but for some numbers, the return is a "null pointer exception" error. My receipt number just happens to be one of those. :-( I don't know if there is some sort of pattern. Hopefully this puts me over my quota of bad luck and everything will be smooth sailing for the rest of the process. :-)

Not a cookie issue from prior access since that page doesn't use cookies. Same result whether I used MS Explorer or Opera on Windows 98; haven't tried XP yet. (Doesn't work at all on any Linux browsers that I am using.) Still a nifty idea to use a bookmark when it works -- I'm merely reporting an observation in case others had the same problem and wondered if they had company.

Yes, I have trouble too once in a while. Next time you have problems, try this:

1. Use the bookmark you created using my instructions above.
2. If you receive the dreaded "500 Servlet Exception" error, click on the "Case Status Search" link to the left.
3. Then use your browser's "Back" button to return to your bookmark again.

That works for me everytime. Try it out. :-) It seems the page doesn't like to be referenced from any other page than the search page.

Hope that fixes it up for you. ;-)

Maybe Im lazy I dont know but I found it easier to let my computer memorize my number. All I have to do is tyoe in the first letter & it brings the rest up for me to click on. Of course I find the weekends so frustrating because thats 2 days a week I dont bother checking the status of our case.

Roman27,

Yes -- the "backbutton" trick indeed works on both the MS Explorer and Opera browsers on my Win98 machine. Still doesn't work on Linux browsers (my OS of choice) - not clear why it would want to be browser-picky for this particular task. Still a kewl idea for the 99.99 percent of those who can use it. Nice tip!
