DV Lottery Entry Status Check opened today.

I attempted to check against my 2018 submission (via the wife) and it's rejecting the code.

This might be because I accidentally reused last year's photographs on the 2018 application.

If they detected that would they outright reject the application or would it still allow me to enter the code?

Members of another board have confirmed the same issue.

They also mention that you should still be able to enter your code even if the photos are rejected or they are usually rejected later in the process.

Not chosen again this year (the second year we have put in for it) but not too disappointed although strictly speaking it's next year that we would want to win as my better half needs to remain in the UK until at least August 2019 in order to naturalise as a British citizen.

I think it place of birth rather than citizenship, and even Northern Irish births are acceptable.

Applied through my wife who's Thai.

Correct, except for those born in Northern Ireland. My better half is Australian-born however.
