You have to get UK ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) ... the equivalent
of a US Green Card with all that that entails. Then after an
appropriate period you can get UK citizenship.

Ask in misc.immigration.misc where UK questions are often answered about
permanent residence in the UK and ILR. Note that you do have to live in
the UK to get ILR.

I don't think the US govt is too keen on its citizens taking on another country's citizenship...however the UK govt. has the opposite approach and once you have British citizenship the only way you can renounce it is by doing so in front of a British consular official!!!

Suggest you look at this site:

http://www.britain-info.org

or just go to a search engine and typing in "how to get British citizenship"

It isn't so easy to acquire British citizenship, but not impossible. Are you intending to live in the UK or get married to a Brit?

Dual citizenship means having the citizenship of
more than one country at the same time. So, what
you really need to be asking is how can you acquire
British citizenship.

In general, there are really only two ways that
would are open to you. The first would be to
see if you have a claim to British citizenship
through ancestry. This might be an option
if you have a parent who was from the UK.
Can you tell us where your parents were born
and what was their citizenship when you were
born. We would also need to know if they
married before or after your were born.
And can you also give the same information
for your grandparents.

If you don't qualify for British citizenship
through ancestry, then your remaining option
would be for you to legally immigrate to the
UK. If married to a British citizen you
would be eligible to naturalize in the UK
after, I believe, 3 years. Otherwise, you
could naturalize there after 5 years.

Here is a good site that deals with the US
policies toward dual citizenship.

Actually dual citizenship for Americans is now tolerated. There is a
lot of dislike for it though amongst some elements of American society,
but for now even the law doesn't make it illegal.

There is another option. If the original poster happened
to have a British born mother, and she was born between
1961 and 1983, then she may soon be eligible to acquire
British citizenship.

Since 1983, a person born outside the UK to a British mother
or father would generally receive British citizenship. However,
prior to 1983, British nationality law was sexist in nature, and
normally, only British men were able to pass their citizenship
to their foreign born children (British women were given a limited
opportunity to pass their citizenship, but it was a the government's
discretion and it had to be applied for before the child was
eighteen years of age).

Starting later this year, someone born outside the UK between 1961
and 1983 to a British mother will have the right to apply for
British citizenship.

So, if the original poster has a British mother she might
be able to acquire it that way.

The same is true, I believe, of US citizenship. It is possible for a US
citizen to hold another citizenship with little or no trouble

My American wife has lived in the U.K for three year and has permanent rights to reside.

We are due to return to America in January.
Does anyone know how quickly she could get dual citizenship?

Thanks

I think you need to ask this question in a UK-related newsgroup (I think
there is a group misc.immigration.uk, or something similar).

As far as I know, the UK will allow her to keep her US citizenship without
a problem, and the US also allows her to keep her US citizenship even
after naturalizing in the UK. So there shouldn't be a problem there.

What you are really asking is how quickly could your
wife obtain naturalization in the UK. You will probably
get a quicker answer if you post this to misc.immigration.misc.
They answer most of the UK related questions there.

This really is a question that you should ask in a newsgroup regarding UK
citizenship law (try misc.immigration.misc); this newsgroup focuses on US
law.

I don't know much about UK law, so I can't tell you anything reliable. But
chances are that either, you are already a dual citizen from birth - in
that case, you wouldn't have to do anything but could simply apply for a
UK passport - or that you can't easily get it through your mother. Your
mother might be able to help you immigrate to the UK and get permanent UK
residency (I think they call it "leave to remain"), and after a few years
of living there, you might be able to apply for UK citizenship, just like
any other immigrant.

However, without knowing UK laws, that's all guesswork.

You, most likely, do not hold British citizenship
but you are probably eligible to apply for it.
Prior to 1983, British women were not able to automatically
transmit their citizenship to their children born outside
the UK. Only British men had that right, and it generally
only applied to children born in wedlock. The law was
changed in 1983, but it was not retrospective, and only
applied to persons born in 1983 or later.

However, in 2002, Britain amended its nationality law
to allow certain persons born to a British mother, outside
the UK, between Feb 7, 1961 and Jan 1, 1983, to apply
to be registered as a British citizen. To find out more
information, you should contact the nearest British
consular office and request Form UK(M) - (application for
registration as a British Citizen by certain persons
born before 1983 to British mothers.) They will provide
you with the form and guidebook, as well as the required
fee.

Note that you will not endanger your US citizenship by
registering in the UK, as long as your intention is
to keep your US citizenship. You can find out more information
about the US policies on dual citizenship at
http://www.richw.org/dualcit/

Stephen Gallagher

P.S. I registered as a British citizen earlier this year
using the method listed above.

My father was born in England and immigrated to the US and is now a US citizen. Does that make a British citizen? Or does it make it easier to obtain British citizenship. Please help. Thanks.

It probably makes you a British citizen. See http://www.britainusa.com/consular/bnatlaw.asp and http://www.britainusa.com/consular/o...5&Other_ID=205 for some more details, but basically if your father was married to your mother at the time of your birth, you are a British citizen by birth. You should be able to simply apply for a British passport at the British Embassy in Washington DC (assuming you live in the US).
