Default different kind of SSN card: marked and unmarked

hi, all.

i just found out that me and my friend (who is also indonesian came to USA with fiancee visa) got different SSN card. my card got marked 'Valid for work only with INS authourization' and she doesnt get any mark, just number and her name on the card. for more information i applied in North Carolina and she in Arizona.

is there any explanation about this? will there be any difference treatment between fiancee visa holder who has SSN card with mark and those who holds without mark?

any input will be appreciated. thanks before guys, have a nice day!

Hi:

Assuming your friend was still on the K-1 entry and her AOS had yet to be approved, she got the card without the legend in error.

The card without the legend is given to US citizens, green card holders [including "conditional" cards] and refugee/asylees. It can be used as evidence of employment authorization when doing an I-9 form for an employer.

Aliens other than the ones listed in the foregoing paragraph get the legend you note. These cards cannot be used as evidence of employment authorization.

However, please note that the number is individual to the person. So when YOU finish your AOS, you can have the card w/ legend replaced by a card w/o legend -- it will have the same number. However, you do not NEED to replace the card since you will have other proof of employment authorization.

BTW, MY card was issued when I was 15 years old in the mid-60's -- it is cardboard with the number pre-printed in RED and my name typed in by a manual typewriter with the second letter of my first name raised up a little bit from the way the old typrewriters reaised the platten to change typefaces. I don't carry the card and don't feel a need for it.

Hi All!

I say go apply for the unrestricted SSN card as soon as you are
eligible, because at some point the conditional I-551 expires and I
believe you then get a letter to say it's been exstended for a year,
but is that going to fly for the I-9. Then you have a restricted SSN
card and an expired I-551 card, so no proof of work authorization.

So you then need to go into a BCIS office to get a I-551 stamp.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the stamp is only good for another year,
then you need to do it again until you receive the new I-551 card and
even that expires after 10 year. So why not get the unrestricted SSN
card and be done with it.

Take care,

Mike
