Re: Damaged immigrant visa envelope - Help
Take it you didn't come to the US with a big white envelope. As Rene stated the envelope contains every piece of paper submitted by you and all the notes from the USCIS and US Consulate for your immigration visa. There are not copies unless you have some at home. As CS said there is a large warning on the front of the envelope that it is not to be opened.

Re: Damaged immigrant visa envelope - Help
Update.
Earlier this week I kept ringing the switchboard at the Embassy, until I found a reasonable operator who got in touch with the visa team and they scheduled an appointment for me to reseal the package.
I travelled to London yesterday night on a short notice and early this morning I went to the Embassy, to the same window where I had the interview. There was no one waiting, probably not interview day today. I handed in the damaged envelope and the passport and, literally two minutes afterwards, the officer gave it back to me resealed in a new envelope. That was all.
I was really surprised, and clearly over the moon, of how efficiently the Embassy personnel helped me solve this issue.

Finally, the fourth one got in touch with the visa team and told me that they scheduled an appointment for me with a two days notice. The key was being stubborn and insistent, as for many things in life.

Three, and they all told me that the visa team does not take direct calls and to use the online contact form.
