Default Citizenship

So, yesterday morning, this happened:

43 people naturalized, which I think was the total for the last month. It was a nice ceremony, including a couple of well-sung close-harmony patriotic songs from an Anchorage women's group, and a short talk from the judge. Each new citizen got to introduce themselves and say where they came from, and say a little thank you speech.

Congrats, did you get the welcome letter with the signature that looks like the Manhattan skyline as well?

Yes. That letter is probably the most ironic thing I own.

Congrats!

Did they play the video? To me it was really rather odd the way the camera just switched to a profile view half way through.

Congratulations, Owen. Your ceremony sounds like it was an interesting and personal experience. Much to be said for a smaller ceremony.

No video, I'm not sure what that would be for - an official welcome? Everything was done in person.

Yes. The last person up was a woman from Guatemala. She was crying with joy and said thank you to America.

Enough said.

I think the video is played in USCIS ceremonies, not judicial ceremonies.

Yes that was so distracting! I think it was to hide the fact that they had to cut it at those points!

We had 450 people at our oath ceremony. Was amazing to see all those people, many of whom had waited years finally realize their goal. Although a smaller ceremony would have been much more impactful I'm sure. My 12 year old kids were pretty bored!

Oh, my kids were pretty bored, at least until it began. We arrived at 9-30, because USCIS recommend you arrive half an hour early. It then turned out that when it said 10-00 on the invite, that was when the doors opened for the naturalization candidates to have our green cards and questionnaires checked for an 11-00 ceremony. My wife and kids were born in the US, so they didn't have anything to do until then.

I was also surprised by the number of people who got to the front of the line and still hadn't completed their questionnaires. That was probably the biggest delay.
