Just checked with my accountant. Wanted to know if we could take child dependent deduction for my fiance's kids in the UK since we will be paying child support. His response was that we could not. The children have to have social security #'s in order for you to take the deduction. He says that according to the Internal Revenue Service if you have no social security #, you don't exist. (in their eyes)
Anyone have a similar situation?

Find out about an ITIN number. It's a number accountants apply for so people who don't have social security numbers can pay for their taxes. By the same token, if the kids are on their parent's visa application (they have to be even if they aren't joining him/her) maybe it will count for something to at least give them a number of identity. If I am not mistaken, all you need is their passport or other document verifying their identity.
May work for you. May not. But you could try.
Good luck.
