Can you please advice on my move to USA?
 

Hi there,

I'm a 29 years old British girl, with a PhD in computing, and I'd love to move and settle down in USA to start a new life there from scratch. Ideally I'd try to work hard for a company for some years (3 to 5 maximum), then study 2 years for a MBA, and after that find a good job.

However, having read the messages in the forum, I feel quite sad and worried, because I realize how difficult it is to succeed in the basic steps, such as finding an employer willing to sponsor you for H1B (would it be better to try and get a job with a US company branch in UK first, and then try with the L1?), then for the green card (which seems to take as much as 5 years?!!!), and not giving up with the so many obstacles that you all have conveyed in the forum. I really need some advice.

Lots of things are easier with a PhD. For one, there is not as much
competition for jobs at that level. A friend of mine with a PhD got his
GC in about 1 year.
Your best bet would be to find an employer who is interested in the line
of work you did for your PhD.

I would second this. Think about research contact you might already
have. Ask your PhD advisor for suggestions, think about the "heros" of
your field, people wout met at conferences etc, then check out the
webpages for their research groups.

If you are flexible with _where_ in the US you want to go, you might
not have much difficulty at all finding someone to sponsor an H1B for
you.
