This is a bit of a long shot, but perhaps someone will have gone through this before!

As we count down the days (hopefully quite a few of them!) till our baby's arrival in
this world, I'm investigating what it will take to get a US passport for the little
'un for our trip to England this October. I hadn't really paid too much attention
because I knew it didn't take too long to issue a passport. What I didn't expect to
find was that it could take Virginia several months to issue the birth certificate!!!

Hearing this, I phoned up the Virginia vital records division and they said it should
be about six weeks which wouldn't be too terrible but what if it took a few more
weeks than that? They then gave me another number which I could try to expedite
things after the birth but I'm not that confident that will yield what I need!

Has anyone had any experience with these issues in Virginia or elsewhere? Any advice?

Andy.

I'm sure you checked it out yourself but in case you haven't you can read about the special requirements at:

http://travel.state.gov/specialreq.html

Also you might want to see if you can obtain a certified birth certificate at your local city hall. Although the births in most states are sent to the state's capital or wherever the central vital records department is, often you can get the bc at the local city hall if the birth is recent.

Yeah, I had a look through all that (even finding the FAQ item that says, "Passports
can be issued to children as young as one day old" which made me chuckle). I was
wondering if they couldn't provide me with a birth certificate whether they would
provide me with the letter saying there wasn't one or whether they would just say
wait! Virginia centralized it's birth certificate process at the beginning of the
20th century - it would be much easier if it was like the marriage certificates which
are still kept in each county (as well as in the state capital) because there would
be no problem getting it then.
