Do you need to be physically in the USA when you submit the N-400 application for citizenship?

My 18 year old son is studying in Europe and on 19 January he is eligible to send in the N-400 application (using the Green card 5 years minus 90 day rule). He will be in the USA for Christmas but needs to fly back before the 19th January to go back to school.

Ideally I get him to fill out and sign the form whilst he is back and on 1/19 we pop it in the post on his behalf while he is away. Once we get a date for biometrics he can fly in for that and likewise for the interview and ceremony.

Anybody ever done this from being based overseas??

Don't forget the physical presence &/or continuous residence tests and you have to be resident in the district for three months before applying. Not sure how that would work with him studying overseas.

Correct.

Keep in mind that he must also meet the continuous residency and physical presence requirements to be eligible. However, if he's at school and you can demonstrate that, it shouldn't be an issue.
