Any problems coming back to USA as a tourist?

Actually, your mother probably wouldn't have qualified for an au pair
status. Au pairs use J-1 status and have to be young people, I think
usually under 24 years old, since the purpose of the au pair program is to
give the au pair some experience with US culture that she would benefit
from for the rest of her life.
Au pairs are NOT nannies.
The only option that I see for your mother is for you to get naturalized
as soon as you can. Once you are a US citizen, you can sponsor your mother
for a Green Card.

But that's not the one the OP really concerns about, is it?
It's a matter of validity of her visa, not what she's doing.
That was what I meant.

What she does is intricately tied to whether her status is valid.
If you work without authorization, you are no longer in status.

Exactly the point Ingo ... and one day spent "working" puts her out of
status not just for that day, but from that day forward until she leaves
the US, even if she goes back to being a tourist!

Exactly the point Ingo ... and one day spent "working" puts her out of
status not just for that day, but from that day forward until she leaves
the US, even if she goes back to being a tourist!
