Hi,
If someone plans to move a few months after obtaining a US passport
(possibly abroad on a work assignment) what is the recommended
permanent address to include in the passport application ?
1. Current address
2. A more permanent address of a friend in the area -> will this cause
any issues since it is different from the address in the N-400 app &
BCIS database?
In general, is there a requirement to have the most current address in
a US passport?
thanks,
js

Common sense...where would you want your passport to be sent to after you
applied for it? You would like to receive it, wouldn't you?
It wouldn't matter anymore where you would want to live after you become a
US citizen! But if you are expecting to receive things sent to you, you
better have an accurate address known to the sender

I don't quite understand your dilemma. And am sure it confused matrix
also.
Per definition, "obtain" is to "acquire, annex, chalk up, gain, have,
pick up, procure, secure, win".
You filed/send in your passport application *BEFORE* not *AFTER*
_obtaining_ a US passport. The passport agency is sufficiently
responsive to a legitimate application for a US passport. It will not
take "months" to obtain. Again, as matrix pointed out, it is a strange
query.

Okay, here's the clarification - the passport app has a mailing
address and a permanent address. No issue with the mailing address -
that's where the passport should be sent. How about the permanent
address? I assume this should be a somewhat permanent address of a
friend or relative if the residential address of the applicant is
likely to change in the near future. Any issue if this does not match
the address listed in the N-400 app and consequently the BCIS
database?

I would think the permanent address has to be YOUR address, not that of a
friend or relative. Even if you plan to move in the near future, that
shouldn't matter.
Is there any reason why you don't want to use the address in the BCIS
database? That would be the most sensible one to use, if it's where you
curently live. Then for the mailing address, you can use a friend's address
if you're concerned you might move before the passport arrives.
I'm pretty sure the address doesn't have to match what was on the N-400
application because obviously you could have moved since then. Since you are
a citizen, you're under no obligation to keep BCIS up to date with your
address, as far as I know.
It just doesn't make sense to me that you don't want to use your own
address, though.

I bet those Al Qaida moles who were eventually able to obtain US passports
had issues about using a traceable address.
Weird request really do make people suspect something is strangely fishy.
