Default Accommodating illegal alien

Hi,

One of our relatives is planning to stay with us. We suspect that person could be out
of immigration status, but we are not sure.

So, what are the consequences to accommodating such person for a month. We are
currently permanent residents. Will this affect our citizenship process if INS became
aware that we accommodated a person with illegal status or will there be monetary
consequences (fines etc..,)?. Are we taking unnecessary risks with INS?.

Thanks in advance

Don't think so. As long as this person is not working for you in your household.
Employer is supposed to check if the employee is authorized to work in the United
States. Don't think host is supposed to check is their guest is in status.

Well - it depends. If this person is just visiting you, I doubt it will be a problem.
Do be aware that there is the crime of "Harboring an illegal immigrant". You would
probably have to do more than just allowing that person to stay with you in order to
be convicted of that, though. Usually, this applies to people who smuggle illegal
immigrants into the country.
