Default 221g Revalidating - US Visas

Hi all

I am in 4th year of working in US on a H1 visa.
After successfull renewal of my H1b this year for the next 3 years, i got a "221g refusal" when i sent my visa for renewal at St.Louis USA.
It says your application is not clearly approvable at this time..please apply at a US Consulate outside US for a intervew with a Consulate officer.

Could someone tell me what exactly is 221g, why is it caused ?
Is it safe to travel outside US when one wants to come back without a problem after visa stamping.

Also wanted to start a new thread where people can post their experiences and thoughts.

thanks..Loki.

Did you send your passport before July 26, when they discontinued the
renewal through St. Louis? If not, that would be the cause.

221g means that the visa wasn't clearly approvable ;-)

In most cases, this means that in order to give you a visa, they would
have to go through the security background check with the FBI and CIA. You
would need to go to a US consulate abroad, apply, and then wait for the
security check to be completed. Be prepared for a lengthy delay, although
most cases are completed in about four weeks or so, it could take as much
as a year. During that time, you would not be able to return to the USA.
