Default “Willing to bear arms”

What happens if you tick No on this part of the N-400? Can you say you’re a pacifist so it goes against your moral beliefs? And then tick yes for non-combant/civilian services?

You'd be doing this to make a point, because the chances of you being forced to bear arms on behalf of the US is, these days, infinitesimally small.

Well you can "become" a pacifist/ conciencous objector at any time, so even if you genuinely would be willing to join the US military at the time you applied to become a citizen, you would be perfectly free to change your mind at any time in future and without notice.

my son was asked if he would be "willing to commit acts of violence to defend the United States" at his naturalization interview.

To be fair, you have to agree to give up allegiance to any foreign King or Potentate too, and most of us have kept our British Citizenship.

Forgive me for not looking up the specific wording, but the meaning is clear

Renounce - 'Formally declare ones abandonment'

Abjure - 'Solemnly renounce a belief, cause or claim'

I don't see that what I stated is contrary to either of those.

So your argument is that you never had to express an allegiance to the Crown in order to gain British citizenship (which you are quite correct you don't have too, since it is inferred at birth) and therefore you don't think that the oath expressly says that you are giving up said Citizenship?

I've never really seen it put like that, but it makes a degree of sense.

I nearly posted that exact thought myself.
