Railway. Experience of shift work, lone working, coping in a crisis? Shoe-in. Won't get a job while overseas, but something to ponder on.

Pollyanna where there is a will there is a way... Can you rent a spare room out to save the money you need to go home? What about airbnb - you can rent out a spare room to travellers. What about doing a night course, ie bookeeping or something where there is demand?

Sorry you are feeling trapped. I know it's easier said than done but if you're going to move back then do it sooner rather than later. Ask your family if they can help you while you get back on your feet. The longer you leave it the harder it'll be for you to navigate towards a positive outcome. And if you can't bring yourself to return to the UK maybe you should work on what you can change to improve your life in Australia.

Re: A whole decade.
A course is an idea, but it would need to be something that would translate to a U K qualification, that I could study at home - working shifts means being unable to commit to have a certain night for a course each week, and nothing financial would be any good, I am hopeless at maths!!

My unit isn't big enough, nor is it well enough maintained, even if the contract allowed it. Shower is on its last legs, as is the cooker, antiquated kitchen, no air con...its good enough for me but I wouldn't want to ask people to pay money to stay there!!
