Funny you should say that ...lol

I've had a few, just typed up a 'one year in' email for friends and family and am dithering on whether to post it here.

I've posted a LOT worse! ...lol, and it WOULD explain it all better.

Hmmm ...

In for a penny!

To be honest I'm currently not convinced that copying and pasting a 'personal' email into an Online Forum is the 'right thing to do' but at the same time as I say it would be an easy way to explain the current situ and I guess a 100% honest look at how it's all going.

Anyway, as I say in for a penny. I've just removed a few parts, but for the few that would be interested:

One year today we touched down at Brisbane Airport to start our new lives! ... HOPEFULLY forever!

So how's it all going?

My course - well goin ok and to plan I guess. I have a completion date of the 24th of August so for now I just have to keep my head down and get on with it. Enjoying it? ... well I suppose most of the time I do. Like anyone I have 'off' days, but generally I do. I'll be happier when and if it brings Permanent Residency, but all to play for still.

Residency - Well as we speak as long as I get my certificate, we all pass police checks both in Oz and UK, all pass medicals, and end up with enough money to actually pay for the application, then well we'll be right! 'As we speak' ... can only go on that as there's talk that people who use study to obtain PR are gonna HAVE to work in their field for 12 months before Immigration will issue PR ... This could come into effect on the 1st of July so as you can guess we / I am worried! ...lol, but seriously if I HAVE to do it I will!

End of the day it ALWAYS was a gamble this route and we've been well aware that ANYTHING can change along the route. Possibly something that will exempt us from applying for PR, but as I keep saying 'if it's meant to be ... it WILL be!' Best way to look at it I reckon!

Accommodation - well we moved into a new house (3rd in a year ...lol) about 6 weeks ago. Basically money is running out and as lovely as that house with pool was, we couldn't sustain it! ... simple as that, but we DID have a good 6 months there. New place is a nice 4 bed again, but with no pool and NO air con. No air con has had it's moments on hot nights, but we bought a portable unit that is effective and summer is officially over, but today was a scorcher! ...lol and I guess that's what The Gold Coast is all about ... 'Beautiful one day, perfect the next!' (slogan often bounced about, but true!) and we're still acclimatising!

Moving nicely on to ...

Weather - Perfect! Don't really need to say more and I guess the MAIN reason we came here. 22C - 28C for most of the year and occasionally it'll dip above and below. We had 37C recently, which WAS hot, but the next day it was back to a lovely 27C. Don't see much rain, which is a problem for Brisbane as their dam is under 20% full as we speak, and soon we go on Level 5 Water Restrictions which basically means you have to flush the toilet once a week! ... lol. Ok ...lol, joking, but you can't clean your car, you can't fill or top up pools, can't water gardens etc so it's pretty heavy! Funny thing is The Gold Coast dam is over 80% full, but we all seem to fall under the same restrictions (for Queensland I think ?!?!) Anyway, we don't have a pool and don't mind a dirty car so we'll survive!

Kids - Well they're both VERY happy here and love it! They're both is the same school now (same before but diff parts with diff start / finish times) and hours are now for them both 6.15 - 1.15 so as you can imagine they have a lot of time free. Ashley will use this to either work (been there for over 9 months now I think ... fast food chicken place) or visit / stay round friends, and Kurt will spend it skateboarding! He had a dabble with it in the UK but it never kicked off. Over here loads of the kids are into it so he's well sorted.

Ashley isn't sure as we speak where she wants to go work wise, but I know she'd love to get into dance somehow, she loves that. Kurt will soon be looking for some work experience in the Air Con industry. I think this will be my line of direction if we get PR, but we'll see. So yeah Kurt seems to want to have some of that himself so the school will find him a few weeks and we go from there.

Overall I think / know they LOVE it here. Pretty much EVERY weekend there's a party, or for Kurt a gig goin on somewhere, or it's 'sleep over' at a friends. Ok, sometimes it's their friends staying over, but of recent pretty much every weekend we have to ourselves! ... and WON'T complain! ...lol.

End of the day they're VERY happy!

Money - Ok can't side step this one ...lol. We came out with every penny we had to our name and was (and still am) willing to throw it all at getting PR in this country. We had the problem with Nic ditching the course and losing $17k. We HAD to get another vehicle, and ok we could've spent less, but all the same we paid X for another vehicle that we didn't budget for. I guess we budgeted for a bit of 'part time' work and to be honest it's been dismal really (Next chapter...lol) so cutting it short we are running out pretty quick, but we'll downgrade the Rav and 'a bit of this' and a 'bit of that' and we'll be right!

Work - Well to my name I've had a months work delivering pizza's and washing dishes! Ok, I'm not proud and will do whatever, but this boss was a dick and ... well, it ended! ...lol. Nic has been luckier as she had a spell at the Theme Parks but that ran dry and since has been trying to get back into Admin, but Part Time hour restrictions put on by Immigration (20 hours pw max!!) don't help. For a later date maybe ?!

Anyway, up till tonight I would've cursed more about the work possibilities but as we speak Nic is pending a reply from Woolworth's for 'Night fill' work which isn't brill, but we can't be fussy and pay is ok. OR!! ... a friend of Kurt's (lot older - 25 - teacher - but into skateboarding and lives 4 doors up hence the link with Kurt) has hooked Nic up with the Finance Director of a casino chain over here. IF the 'temp visa' isn't a prob, then she has the job! ... if it is, then we rely on Woollies! ...lol. It would be good tho as she'll get as good as 20 hours and higher than average pay! Job would be a cashier which we think her bank experience has swayed it, but whatever it takes! This same friend of Kurt's has got me an interview on Tues for a kind of handy man role. It's at the school / college he works at and you just have to be handy and be a tech kind of teachers 2nd man .... perfect! It's 2 days a week so I'll not break the 20 hours and will prob get a lift there and back too! ...lol. Pay isn't brill I hear, but as I say can't be fussy and it'll prob be a laugh.

So yeah, work HAS been hard, but we're pulling out all the stops and WILL be right! ... one way or another! I'll not mention figures, but without further supplemental income we simply WON'T do it so we're back to crossing fingers really for now.

We'll be right! ... (sounding Aussie yet ?!? ...lol)

Me and Nic - Well I guess like anyone we've had our up's and down's (oooh err!! ...lol), but with the current pressure I think / know it's been justified! I think I speak for both of us when I say that we absolutely love life in Australia. Ok, we have work / money issues but I have the Air Con route to possibly follow if we get PR and PR will lift work restrictions on Nic and she'll be off! Who knows, the Casino job might be her thing!

We both very much enjoy having a lot more time together, and are trying to have a day at the beach every weekend. Last time Ash tagged along, the prev time Kurt. NOT that they don't get along ...lol, it's just they both have their lives and often will be doing other things.

I guess we're happy to see the kids happy. We spent a bloody long time researching our entry into Oz, trying to find the 'best chance of success' and we've done it for them as much as us. If we didn't move soon Ashley would hit the age where SHE would have to make her own application to get in, so as I say it was now or never really!

Me and Nic said right in the beginning that if either of the kids don't want to go, or the dog can't go (at the start didn't know if Bull Terriers were allowed in Oz. Turns out to prob be a top 3 breed ... lol ... anyway!) ... WE'LL not go!! If we can't go complete as I say we don't go. Turns out the kids loved the idea and Max was fine.

Moving on to ....

Max - I guess I should include him. He said he's happy. He likes a bit of sunshine now and then, but isn't too keen on the hot days (seldom). He likes going for long walks at the local fields and is generally enjoying life over here too.

To conclude.

Well as I say apart from the work / money issues everything is going to plan and 'crossing fingers' we'll be right! (gotta stop that now!!) ...lol. Australia is all we want from life and so far we ALL continue to be happy and you can't want more than that really. Bring on the PR!!!

Random other bits.

Ashley is now licensed to drive! ... ...lol. She took the equivalent of the UK Theory test and passed. She HAD to score 27+ out of 30 so it WAS tight, but she passed and as I say is now licensed to drive with a qualified driver next to her. I've had the 'over 30' restriction removed from the Corolla's insurance so as soon as we get the time the lessons begin! To be honest I've let her have half hour of driving the Rav round some wasteland and I don't see any major probs! ...

We don't currently have Broadband ... Long boring story but short is Telstra (BT equiv) won't upgrade my local phone exchange and I'm stuck with 'dial up' ... painful!!! ... but after 6 weeks of dial up ... we see a light at the end of that dark dark tunnel!! ... 'wireless broadband' Basically sent thru the air and you have a little aerial on your roof! slow compared to ADSL thru a phone line, expensive!, but it IS Broadband and with normally 3 PC's and a laptop normally connected to the net ... well, there's certain luxuries in life I'll even cut hair to pay for! ...rofl

Last random point is I've ran out of beer ...lol and am up for school in less than 6 hours so at last will hit the send button and bid you all farewell! ...

Love to all!

Paul, Nicola, Ashley, Kurt and Max

XXX

WBG and good night!

We don't currently have Broadband ... http://usera.imagecave.com/piccies/Smileys/scared.gif Long boring story but short is Telstra (BT equiv) won't upgrade my local phone exchange and I'm stuck with 'dial up' ... painful!!! ... but after 6 weeks of dial up ... we see a light at the end of that dark dark tunnel!!
