Default Blooms in Oz Tricia's Diary part 3

January
A quite month at the start everything is settling down after Xmas, mum has come out of hospital and has finally had her hip replacement done so hopefully she will be on the road to recovery. My brother never managed to go and visit her the whole time she was in there.

Daniel has just rang me after doing his driving test and……..HE PASSED………I am really pleased for him, he sounded so chuffed on the phone. I am not sure how I will feel when he goes out on his own for the first time though!!
Mind you its slightly different here, once they pass they have to have 25 hours of supervised driving, that means he can drive legally on the roads, but must have a qualified driver as a passenger, they have to keep a log of the driving and cannot do it all in one go, it must be over so many days. Then when they have done that, they have to go and do a virtual driving assessment on the computer. I am not sure why they have to do all this as it certainly does not make them good drivers, they are appalling.

Jordie arrived on Sunday (Johns friend the one that goes to Thailand every year) , it took him 2 hours to get through customs, he said they even checked the messages on his mobile phone!! Not sure why they would do that or what it would prove?? He also told them he was carrying soil, as he thought there might have been some on his golf shoes?? What an idiot still that’s Jordie!!

He was very tired when he arrived, and said he had an upset stomach from the poached eggs on the plan…………Hmmmmmmmmm nothing to do with the alcohol he consumed then?

We had a long weekend this week as it was Australia day on Saturday, we went to the beach in the evening took a picnic with us and watched the fireworks. It was good fun; we went with our neighbours and there kids. There was a real party atmosphere and everyone was happy (or drunk!) The weather was lovely and the water was so warm

February

Well that’s January over with,
Mind you the time at the moment seems to be dragging for me I am sure it will speed up once feb 9th comes though as that is the date jordie goes home!!!!!! l its like having my mother with me twice over.

I had the bright idea of going to Hillarys last night …(should have known that was a mistake, you know my bright ideas are usually a diaster, remember my last bright idea of going on a bus ride when we were in Cuba!)…So anyway.. we had to take 2 cars as all of a sudden everyone wanted to come for the ride. So john has the bright idea of letting Daniel drive (remember he has to do 25 hours supervised driving) So he will go in the manual car with Daniel, April and her friend and I could take my mum and jordie in the other car. Well silly me decided to go the long way round so Jordie could see the sights. STUPID IDEA OR WHAT??. It took an hour and I had a hour of snapping, bickering and general “this is not as good as England/Thailand! I gave up showing him the sights as everything I pointed out he had some disparaging comment to make about it and my mother agreed with him.

When we finally met up with john I told him that there were kinder ways to get rid of me if that’s what he wanted, just shoot me or push me off the Jetty, surely its kinder than trying to send me mad by putting me in a car with them two for an hour!
(John rearranged the travelling details for the way home very tactfully so I only had my mother, think he new I was on the edge)

And here I go again today , as I finish work early, well 10 minutes ago to be precise they are coming to Perth to meet me, but it is only John and Jordie as I left the car at home this morning and got a lift…….didn’t do it on purpose honest (haha)

On Friday we went to the Burswood after shopping in perth John and Jordie went in the casino I didn’t I just waited outside watching the world go by. When they came out we went in the Irish Pub that is in there and had dinner it was really nice a good place to go if we don’t want to pay restaurant prices.

When we had finished, we drove Jordie up to kings park so he could see the city all lit up at night, even he had to admit he was impressed with the view, it was such a warm evening there were people having picnics there. Just sitting in the dark eating and looking at the view there was a storm somewhere in the distance over the back of the city so that just made it look even more spectacular.

My mum has thrown a real tantrum this week and has told me she is going back to England once her leg is better, she got quite a shock when I just said OK then just let me know when you have booked your flight and I will arrange to take you to the airport! She the said oh well I don’t know where I will go, so I told her best to work that out first so you know what airport you want to land at. I think she was a bit lost for words as she thought she would upset me and I would be begging her to stay.

She has also managed to upset April and Daniel this week, so far john and the dogs are the only ones she hasn’t upset.(there turn will come!)

March

So excited it’s finally the Month that Barb Chris and Megan arrive preparations are going ahead to get the rooms ready.
21/05/08 12.05 am they arrived john and I went to the airport to meet them. They got through customs pretty quick and we were home by 1.15am. Then sat up talking till 4.30 am!! Good job its Easter weekend and no work on Monday.
They spent there first week looking around and getting adjusted to there new surroundings as we are all off down south WA, for a trip next week.
Day of our trip arrives and its pouring down real aussie style rain. We all have our blooms on tour t- shirts on and look like a family of window lickers!
Ok first stop Bunbury, pouring down so can’t really look around just had some thing to eat then went on our way. Next stop Margaret River (still raining) and the chocolate factory.
Could not find the chocolate factory (as its not actually in MR!!) so we stopped at a tourist centre to ask for directions while we were doing that John and Chris decided to check out the annoying noise the trailer was making on the way down.
Barb and I found out the Choc factory was about 50klm away so went back to the car where John and Chris are waiting with worried looks on there faces. Now the noise was just something loose in the trailer but that wasn’t all they found when they opened the trailer. The trailer was leaking! Remember the rain all they way from home? Well most of it was in our trailer with our luggage floating on top!....oh well we can dry it out when we reach our next stop of Pemberton.
Petrol was really expensive in M.R so we just put $30 in and would fill up at the next stop…now if you have ever done this journey you are probably realising what a mistake that thought was…as there are no friggin petrol stations on the way!! So picture this it’s getting dark, there are no town, houses or signs of life for that matter Just trees tress and more bloody trees. The cars petrol indicator has started to bleep because we only have 80klm of fuel left, however the sat nav tells us we have 94klm to go. Did we panic? ..No funnily enough we didn’t well at that point any way. The petrol gauge seemed to be dropping faster that the miles on the sat nav (sorry kilometres, see still a pom at heart) its ok I said we arekilometersC we can just call them if we don’t make it …good idea except …NO signal!
Cars petrol indicator is really bonging now, as its nearing Zero when in the distance we see the lights of Pemberton and the petrol station. IT WAS SHUTDOWN…omg how far away is the hotel? as we now have no fuel according to the gauge. Hotel is just up the hill (why couldn’t it have been down?)
Somehow or other the car made it up the hill and we pulled in to our hotel with a sigh of relief. John and Chris started unloading while Barb and I went to check in. John and Chris came over to reception to find us sitting on a bench in what can only be described as hysterical laughter, “what up “ they said. “the hotel is shut!” yep no signs of life at all. Then we spotted a note stuck on the door addressed to us from the management with our room numbers and keys in …how trusting…

We get into our rooms which were very nice unpack out rather soggy clothes and decide to head into town to get food. Now you would think that after everything else this part would be ok. The car coasted down the hill. The men left us to find food as they had found another petrol station further up the road that was hopefully still a working one (which it was when it was open!)
The car makes it back to us on thin air, just as we have discovered that the IGA was …you guessed it CLOSED, however there was a chicken treat that was OPEN at last!
So in we all rushed tired wet and Famished and started to give the girl our order….! Chicken and Chips meal ! Chicken Roast meal etc… when the girl finally manages to interrupt us and a small voice say “sorry we have run out of chicken” We all just collapsed into fits of laughter and I am sure the girl thought we were all mad!
However she did have some micro waved mush out the back so we had that in rolls with chips and coleslaw…What a feast!...
The car some how made it back up the hill, Now what I think I need to point out is the time , you are all probably reading this thinking it 10-11ish at night..right?? No it was 6.30 pm!!
Next morning car coasted down hill made the petrol station which thankfully was OPEN and was filled, along with a petrol canister that remained filled in the boot for the rest of the journey!!
We spent the next day and night in Pemberton. A very small country town, where everything shuts at 6pm, but is very pretty and lovely people.

Then on to the next leg of our Journey Albany. The trip there was fairly uneventful we were safe in the knowledge that we had petrol food and I had rung ahead to the hotel to let them know our Arrival time. The only slight worry we had was when we run out of…………………………….ROAD!. But we made it there and Albany was really lovely the hotel was nice, we ate in a nice Italian restaurant and the next day went to visit 2 people bay a long walk but the view was breath taking.

Next leg of trip to Esperance long uneventful journey , again I called up in advance to let them know the time of our arrival. Now I new this hotel did not have a restaurant, but in the web site it advertised a restaurant only 150m from hotel, as it was Thursday the man on the phone said it was late night shopping and Woolworths would be open.

We checked in at the hotel at around 7pm, I asked the man on the desk if our rooms were adjoining and he said “No, but they are right next to each other Numbers 11 and 13, well that’s if you don’t count number twelve that’s in the middle”
Barb and I trying not to laugh then asked where the restaurant was, he replied well you see across the road there, we looked, Yes we said, but all we could see was a burger van. Silence, so I said the Burger van to which his reply was “they sell chips too! I said “is that the restaurant that you advertise as being 150m from the hotel on your web site?” “yes” he said with a proud smile.
So we decided to go to Woollies and get some supplies and see what else was open….nothing just woollies and a red rooster.
Now without trying to sound disparaging the people that were out late in Esperance they were all a little strange in fact Chris keep referring to the village of the dammed and Zombies!
Wollies smelt of rotting meat and fruit and from what we saw most of it was. We only bought stuff in packets and headed of to RR for our dinner.
The first thing I asked the girl “was do you have Chiken?” To which she just gave me a funny look (or was that just her wonky eye) and said “Yeth” So off I went into our order, unsure if tChickenls came with drinks I asked her that exact question “ do these meals all come with drinks to which she replied “ ehell mlls wth chicken ev drenk enpse ellx pet the ,ls th denehef onberd’ Pardon I said, she sighed and said again only louder this time “ ehell mlls wth chicken ev drenk enpse ellx pet the ,ls th denehef onberd’
I just looked at John, so he asked the same question got the exact same reply and said thats fine we will just take the from the cabinet then. I was astounded, when we Left I asked him what she had said “Not a clue” said John!
I looked back at the exasperated faces of Chris and Barb and new they were having the same experience.
Pretty town in the daylight!

Next stop Kalgoorlie, big mining town (well big compared to our last stops) and people were friendly and relatively normal. Except until you ask for a sausage sandwich! The superpit was amazing and we went down a mine as well. The girls got to go shopping and Chris and John got to drive past the bordellos about 5 times I think!!

When we left Kalgoorlie the sat nav made Chris laugh as It said turn left in 595klm. We stayed on the great eastern highway until we reached the Burswood casino where we stayed for our final night before heading home.

We had a great time the whole 3 weeks they were here, but our road trip will stay in our memories forever. I was so sad to see them leave and was very quite on there last day, as was Barb, I don’t think we wanted to think about saying goodbye… but as Barb has always said its not goodbye its see you soon

Well I cant believe its nearly November 2008” I am still at my boring job only I manage the boring department now!!
April has been accepted at Mindarie senior college for her last 2 years of school Daniel is still at uni , but thinks he would like to join the police force when he has finished his degree.
Mums doing ok, she gad a stroke in August but seems to be recovering well at the moment.
Dogs are fine, little lucky still has his moments but is generally a happy little contented dog now ( he never went anywhere) we also have a canary called Bertie.
Life has moved on so fast I cannot believe I am in my second year here. How do I feel? I am a lot more settled, I know now that if I ever did go back to the UK there are many things I would miss about living over here.

Not only that But Barb Chris and Megan loved it so much they are applying for emigration (must have been that road trip that sold it to them haha)

They are coming back for a holiday this Christmas with there Mum and I am really looking forward to seeing them all again.
Unfortunately Barbs Dad passed away earlier this year. It was hard to be on the other side of the world when you know your friends are going trough such a loss and John and I felt like we should be there out of love and respect for her Dad. We decided that we could be there in our own way and went to the beach and watched the sun set and said “see ya George” as the sun went down. It was an amazing sunset that night and one that like George will always remain in our hearts.

It was an amazing sunset that night and one that like George will always remain in our hearts.

Hi Tricia,
It sounds so great over there. Can you help solve a problem? Do you have to take your driving test again when you move over to Oz? Also, my husband is an HGV Truck driver, will he have to re set his test?
We are looking at Perth to live, What are the rental house prices out there?
I have been on real estate, but a girl i know who is from Oz said real estate houses are expensive to rent. I am looking at a 3 bed house.
Thanks
