2 years in Rockingham

Hi all

thought i would update now we are reaching the 2 year milestone!

well what can i say ...WE LOVE IT :D started off rough, with medical problems, and then when we arrived we couldnt get a rental for love nor money..thought we would be going back in week two because we had nowhere to live. OH couldnt get a job even though he was a fitter.. thankfully i am a nurse so i had a job to come to.

anyway now the children have blossomed..we have been in our own home for 5 months (finally i could put my pictures up!) OH is finally settled in work, just been offered a 10% pay rise. I have now been made a Sister...

I love Rockingham..i even like Rockie City shopping center..i know Rockingham gets bad press but it is lovely.

i have met many people..some i thought would be good friends and turned out that they weren't..

Overall we are happy with our decision and wish everyone who is trying to get here all the best.

Debbie

Too late we are moving into a rental port Kennedy today , not seen anything yet . Feeling depressed about moving there as no idea about anything . We been staying in a temporary rental Connolly ( north ) and got used to it . Hope south is better . We were told not to touch rockingham by agents in both northern suburbs and mandurah . But us too could not get a rental only one we could get was over priced and been empty a while !! It's near the stargate shopping centre port Kennedy . Kids are enrolled into port Kennedy primary , and warnbro high . Any advise appreciated my friends .

When you move your old security that was is a big jigsaw that has been thrown onto the floor into many scattered pieces.

It takes time, hard work and networking to get even on even keel and moving forwards.

Persevere, keep doing the right things it will come ,if you wanna talk any time get in touch.

If you can afford private school great, p kennedy should be ok, but keep a sharp eye on warnbro

Today put application in for living waters waiting to hear about appointment to see principle . Went to see warnbro large school impressed with some of the tech side of things but kids look like tramps . Sorry to any of you who's kids go there but . Lip piercings pink hair red hair drawings all over some boys hand . Some kids wearing jeans . No order or discipline kids swearing . My boys went to a state school in England and I thought that was bad , well the kids are probably ok and I have my tounge pierced so I am no fuddy snob . But to see a school that's meant to be one of the best in the area like that , oh and obviously my son wants to go there !!!! As he can wear trainers and be lazy like usual . I am not so sure .... !! . He got into trouble back in the uk with police as got in to wrong crowd !! Smoking at 14 etc so I am over worried about him getting worse . Will let u all know what happens

Glad you are enjoying life.

We are moving to Safety Bay in 4 weeks and its great to here positive views of the area. Our 2 girls are going to SB primary until the hols and then our eldest will be starting SB high. Any advice on schools would be great. We were over last year validating and got a good feel for the area so fingers crossed.

The shippers are in as I type and everything now is starting to feel VERY real.

we have friends too who have kid at Living waters... they are really happy/pleased with it.... Best piece of advice???? Go to everything you are invited to... even the opening of an envelope..

as for trainers ? yup its customary to wear trainers to school... kids can then run faster when they get stopped by the police or truant officers ... less likely to be brought home in disgrace ... which has to be a good thing IMHO

Haaa that's a good one ... Ref trainers lmao . The thing with living waters have I got to go to church ? As that is something I can't be arsed with . Rather go to an envelope opening lol . Harley has his interview this morning at living waters . If no joy will try maranatha :)

Re: 2 years in Rockingham

I have to say that I can see where rocky gets its bad rep but this is going back years now???. Stacks of new housing, retail developments and transport links have changed the area into one of the best around. Only 30min on train to city and I thinks rocky has the best beaches around (and walking distance from home I might add!)

A nice new marina and a shops/bars are on the way!!! I would have to say that this is one thing that rockingham lacks by the way.... Bars and resturants!! They might have the Number 1 beach in wa but everyone knows more needs to be developed!!

Even still, totally happy here after 7 months and would not think about going anywhere else :)

I went to Safety Bay Primary from 1958 until 1963. Only 4 classrooms in those days.

bruce n Sheila - how did you get on with the interview at Living Waters - No you don't have to go to church. I have one in PP & the other in Yr6 & they are both quite happy there - but they can't wear trainers - my older daughter was a bit miffed with this to begin with but now she is ok as they all wear the same crappy shoes!! Anyhow if you want to meet up etc just PM me.

Rockingham can have many advantages, such as accessibility for services and a lovely beach etc etc, and other aspects.

The image of bogan which is used to have has dissapeared now a bit. As for Rock shops. Shops will be shops, good or bad. I have met spolit brats in certain westenr suburbs of perth and they are nauseating to be honest.

I got pretty ill last year, and friends in Rockingham were there to help at an instance. In some other certain 'up themselves suburbs' in Perth would have walked over you on the street (perhaps?).

Cheers:)

We are getting ready to celebrate 2 years living in (Oz and) Rockingham this week!
Very happy to be in Rocko, love the Foreshore, Shoalwater (where we live), Penguin Island, Point Peron, the nearby surf and snorkelling (heaps of dolphin encounters, no shark sightings yet!). Awesome fishing a boating area also...I could go on:D

I would disagree that Rockingham needs developing more, its great as it is, let them do that at Mandurah etc!:p

The Bogan image is very out of date I'd say, but it's a good thing as it probably keeps some snobs away:thumbup::rofl:

Nice one, hope you are loving all the times and things to do there. There are also some lovely little cafes near the front around Safety Bay. Lovely cycling and walking etc.

Re: 2 years in Rockingham

Safety Bay and Shoalwater have changed boundaries over the years. Growing up there in the late 50's what is now Shoalwater used to be Safety Bay. The yacht club at Safety Bay used to be right on the water, there was no sign of that massive expanse of sand that is there now.

Penguin Island used to have shops and cabins. I used to work in the shop in the school holidays and drive the barge back and forth. In those days it was a leftover army Duck (DUKW, I think).

We once slept overnight in one of the bunkers at Point Peron. A huge winter storm came through and we had to be rescued by my parents. Long Point (Becher Point) was a favourite spot. Slept on the beach and swam and surfed all day. In later years we could drive on that beach and fish and have BBQs but then the developers moved in and had the beach closed off.

I can remember watching war games at Waikiki beach as a kid. When it came time to develop housing there, years later, they were digging up unexploded bombs all over the place.

Safety Bay Primary was 3 classrooms. Kwinana High School was years 8, 9 and 10. It's now been bulldozed and replaced by Gilmore College. John Curtin High School in Freo was years 11 and 12. It's now a performing arts school, I think. We had to catch the bus from Safety Bay to Freo every day, 7am departure.

Sounds like a bit of interesting history. Yes, I like walking out to the Island when it's the right tide and is very nice indeed.:D

Is your daughter in Mrs Lewis's class, if so I think my daughter knows her. I am sending mine to Safety Bay high as well. I took them from the catholic school and have found they are getting on much better in the state system and have also made a lot more friends.

We will be here in Safety Bay 3 years this January and have to say I love it. I felt right at home as soon as I landed in Perth airport but hubby was a bit different. I love the fact that I can just drive down to a beach whenever I feel like it, which I often do on my own. Just sit there with a cup of coffee and a book for an hour or so, something I wouldn't have done in Dublin.

Absolutely gorgeous, I wouldn't swap it for anything. I laugh now when I think about when we were leaving, everyone was saying I give her a year and she will want to come home. Not on your life, hubby asked a few months back if I wanted to go home on a holiday next year I told him he could go but there was no way he was getting me back there even for a holiday.
