Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Hi, I wasnt here since I got my new job in Timeline logistic in Saskatoon.

I am here since october last year.
I would like to write you something about my feelings and how I enjoy this company.

Timeline is a young company with 25 trucks. We have only new trucks and trailers...I call them new becouse they are less then 2 years old. Mine is just one year old now. But we work with another company and sometimes pull their older crap trailers....
I must say they treat me perfect down here. Everything they told me before I arrived was true. They paid for my flight ticket, they paid for my hotel for first two weeks until I got my Class 1 driving licence and started driving.

We mainly work for oilfield companies. Timeline has got flat decks and step decks only. We usually deliver pipes from Edmonton AB, to Houston and surrounding area in Texas. I usually do between 12 and 14 000 miles a month. It can be done legally. We have got electronic log books and we are under no pressure to break the law.

I must say Timeline keeps their trucks running....I never wait for another load more the a day...I usually deliver a load and get another one the same day...but sometimes it can happen that it is not like that. But even if you have to wait Timeline pays 75 CAD for every 24 hours of waiting...
To be honest with you....I was waiting in november about 4 days in Edmonton for a load, becouse they had a Thanksgiving day in states and there were no loads becouse nobody worked in states since thursday until monday....but it happend only once and it was for a reason...

Another true about Timeline...you will feel like a human and not like a phone number. As far as I know here about 6 british drivers...only few of them left and it was becouse their wifes didnt enjoy Canada....

Another thing....you are expect to work...sometimes I do reset in states and sometimes in Saskatoon but I never know where I will stay...I dont really mind...I am single and like it here....but if you have family Timeline will do their best to get you home as much as possible...

From my point of view Timeline is a good company to start...
I know that here are drivers from another good companies too...you can ask them how happy they are...I believe Timeline is not only one good company in Canada....but I only wanted to share my opinions with you becouse I found some info about Timeline on this forum and that was why I contacted them....

As far as I know they applied for anothe LMOs to employ even more UK drivers...If you need just contact them....you can write them email or use their facebook....Troy is fine and he always answers all my questions....he will definatilly answer all your questions too...
you will find more info about payments on the website if you need....

www.timelinelogistic.ca

And now about money...I believe that is also important....I dont know what is the best rate per mile...but we get 0.43 CAD per mile...
plus 20 CAD each border crossing, 50 for loading, 50 unloading, 50 for tarping, 75 for layout....
when you do a reset in states or out of Saskatoon...you can choose if you want to stay in truck and get 75 CAD, or you can go to a hotel and Timeline will pay the bill for your hotel....it is your choice...
Maybe I forgot about something so just check the website...you will find it there...

My colleagues told me that the average what they bring home each month is 4 400 CAD....but I dont know why but I bring home a bit more in average....
Plus every three months you get bonuses....
bonuses are for....pulling a step deck...keeping truck clean, good contact with transport managers...and bonus for safe driving...it means...no penalties and no accidents....

Now some bad things in here.....the winter is crazy here...temperatures jumping up and down....it is -30 C and wind chill -47 C :-) It is hard to work in this weather...but dont worry you can do it...all of us can do it...
we are not made from sugar...as my father always says :-)

another bad thing is tarping the load in this freezing weather....it is really hard job....but we usually load at least a few trucks on the same place in Edmonton so we always help each other....nobody is on hurry...we always get a message from our boss to help each other...they dont want you to injur yourself....we only tarp the loads from Canada....we dont tarps the loads going from US...it can happen but very rarely...
we have to tarp the pipes from Edmonton becouse they dont want the salt from road to get on them...that is the main reason...as soon as the winter is gone...we dont have to tarp it anymore...

another crazy experience....as I said we usually go down to Texas....it is fine...I like it...but now in Texas is about 25 C and here in Canada -30 C....I am fine with that but be prepared that you will wear one day a down jacket and a few days later shorts and T-Shirt....

and a few fact yet....
the driving licence in this area will cost you 2075 CAD, Troy told me to bring at least 4 000 CAD with me becouse he knew that I will wait for a first payment at least 5 weeks....I had to pay my driving licence and the rest of the money I spent for food and some working clothes and other important things....but it is better to bring a bit more money with you...
but the good thing is that you will get these money back in a spring time in a tax return....Troy will explain you how it works....I am still not ready to explain how it works but I know I will get my money back soon :-)

we get paid twice a month...every 15th and 30th each month....

If you need to know anything else...you can ask me or contact Timeline....
they will be always ready to answer....

Please, dont take this as an advertisment for Timeline logistic...
no houlage in the world is the best one....but I like that I feel like a human here and that my boss is always so friendly....
I know that Timeline is short of drivers at the moment....and they are waiting for another LMOs....this is why I write here becouse there will be chance soon to get a job here....
but you dont have to come over here....you can find maybe better company....I wish you all good luck....
I like it here....Canadians are very nice people.....

I feel more freedom here then in Europe....
maybe I it is only my feeling but I really feel like that....

Good luck to you all....anywhere you go....I hope you will enjoy Canada like me....

:-)
wow....camera in the cab? No, really...we have got nothing like that :-)
I had no delivery to Kentucky yet anyway :-)....

We have got an electronic log books and it is conected through satelite...so my boss always knows where I am thanks to the log book he always know how much job I can do yet....so this works for both sides....

another good thing is that we have got small size scanners in our trucks...it is really great...it doesnt need a much room and I can scan and send my paperwork from my cab to my boss....it takes just a few minutes....I know that some drivers need to go to truck stop and fax the paperwork and pay for it...of course they will get their money back later, but this is much easier....

I tried to edit my post and i ended up deleting it - oops!

They sound like a good company, at least your enjoying it. We originally looked into new zealand because there was so much construction work going but my OH really likes the idea of canada and so do i. He has less than 6 months class 1 experience so not sure if anybody would be interested in him but we'll give them a try.

So cheers for the contact, i'll get him to send his details

That is the trouble. People talk too much...

When I was looking for job in Canada...I did my search but in the end of the day....I just go and try it...becouse people sometimes dont say true...so now I am here and I know the true....
and I just want to share what I know to help others to decide...

and it would be good for us if another UK drivers come over...
some drivers told me that there is about 20 000 people from UK living in Saskatoon....there is a british shop as well....but my friends told me that it is expensive but everybody go there sometimes....

Milanuk Feb 1st 2013 6:15 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Scottishstacey

the winter here is crazy....temperatures jumping up and down.....
but remember....you will spend just a few days here and then you will spend most of your time in USA....

an example about jumping temperature over here...
I am in Estevan SK....I did my delivery here yesterday and was nearly out of hours...today I can start recup so another driver will bring me loaded trailer in one hour and I go back to Houston....
the temperature last night was -30 and windchill -45...
but when I woke up this morning...it is only -9....

dont worry...you will get use to it....
I know that only one UK driver left from Timeline becouse he didnt like the winter :-)
My friend is from Scotland...he is from Glasgow...he is here with his wife...and he dont mind the freezing temperatures.....
as far as I know he dont like the food in USA so his wife cook for him british food :-)
I am single so nobody cooks for me but I dont mind to eat anything :-)

Timeline dont mind if drivers take their wifes with them....a few of them do it like that....Timeline gives them a bigger trucks with more room...they usually get a Freightliners Cascadia or Coronado...they have got two beds inside...

I have got Peterbilt 386 with one bed only but a big bed :-)

Milanuk Feb 1st 2013 6:20 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

James

we dont do uranium yet....Timeline was suppose to get a contract but the company we should work for has finished....
so now Timeline tryes to get another contract with somebody else...

But I can not do uranium until I get my PR...it will take 18 months before I get it...

I really dont know if trucks pulling uranium need a camera in their cab...nobody in Timeline said anything about that...

If I ever start pulling uranium....I will let you know if they put camera in my cab :-)

I had a camera in my cab.....but it was when I worked for Turners in UK...they put a cameras in our truck that were facing us....it was becouse we had a bad times and some drivers had a serious accidents so they thought it will help to reduce accidents :-)....
I hated that...I was happy when they took it off after few weeks...

Hello Milan..
Nice to see a positive post with regards to an employer :)

couple of questions for you if you would be so kind?
1) What licence /experience did you have before applying to timeline
2) Will they consider applicants with no canadian trucking experience ,but UK only?
3) Who is best person to contact (rather than fill out website application) as it is asking for Canadian license number etc
lastly , remember there is no such thing as bad weather only bad choice in clothing..

'soon

D (glasgow)

cannot pm you for some reason

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Hi,
here are some answers :-)

1) I had about 9 years experience....I think that canadian companies ask for at least 5 years experience....
2) Yes, of course they will consider UK experience...I had no canadian experience when I applied with Timeline
3) you can find the contact at www.timelinelogistic.ca in the section "contact us"
write them email...I believe they will send you answer within a day or two...
or give them call...there is a toll free number....just put +1 at the start...please mind the different time here :-)

From what I've read on some posts it is possible to find companies that will higher you with less than 5 yrs experience, some quote 2, best thing to do is to contact them and find out yourself :fingerscrossed:

That is true

just try to contact them...
try to email them and tell them the true
or ring them....it will be even better I think

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Thank you for this post, Milanuk. This is the kind we newbies would like to read in here. Think i read in another post that you live in the tractor, and would like to have 3 weeks off every 3.month...
This is interesting to me aswell... I am 49 years old, alone atm, so i wouldn't mind to live like you do.. Have 20 years experience of truckdriving in Norway/Sweden,(on and off) so i was thinking; Is it possible to work let's say for 9 months, and then 3 months off? Then back to 9 months again..
Just a thought tho..i am in a research period now, about moving to Canada, and i like the pipeline driving you do:thumbup:
Another question; In that extrem cold, isnt everything freezing? Brakes on trailer ect? Is your heater enough to keep it warm for you in there? And that tarp must be stiff like iron lol

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Hi Terry,
as far as I know it shouldnt be a problem. No driver works on this basis at the moment in Timeline but I believe it would be possible to do 9 on 3 off.

I would like to do it in future like that but now I think the Permanent residency is more important for me and once I get it I will have more choices.
Actually my friend told me that we have one driver who works only from spring to winter and he spends all winter time down in Mexico on beach :-) He should be coming back now becouse the snow is gone :-)

I was working about 6 months since I arrived and I just came back from my first holiday. I spent two weeks in Canadian rockies and it was amazing. I know that there is usually no problem to get holiday anytime we need. I remember one mexican guy who is here about 6 months as well and he had 6 weeks holiday already.

Now the winter. Yes, winter is a challenge for us here but nothing that we couldnt manage. Roads are icy and nobody was gritting them. Only crossroads and bends. ¨But roads are wide and straight here so it is no problem.

frozen breaks...that is the issue :-) Only joking :-) On american trucks you can use tractor and trailer breaks seperatly when parking. So we always use only tractor breaks, they never freeze.
If you need to drop trailer for any reason...it is always better to wait about 10 minutes then move forward and backward and then drop it....it usually helps and the breaks dont freeze.
If they freeze you need to hammer them. It happend to me about twice during all 6 months winter and it usually took me about 5 minutes to release them again.

Tarps are frozen solid during the winter and we had to use them mainly on pipes going from Edmonton to Texas. I was affraid about this but in Timeline we usually load more than 2 trucks on the same place so there is always somebody to help you. If you dont feel you can do it, just call dispatcher and he will find solution. Nobody is pushing us to do something that we couldnt manage.
There are of course some tricks....like puting tarps in tool box on the trailer to keep them away from the freez.

You said you are 49....so my advice is contact some companies asap becouse some will not employ you once you reach 50....
It happend to my friend last year. He was 50 and one month old and HR in Calgary didnt want to talk to him....

I dont know all companies who do pipe job....but I know only Timeline in Saskatoon, Triline in Alberta...I think they are in Calgary....and Watt and Stuart in Alberta....they all know how to use LMO etc....There is definatelly more companies doing pipeline but these will know how to bring you over etc....
as I told you...once you get PR you will have more freedom...but you need to give it a bit time.....
I am new to this job...I have never done pipes before...I did taltliners and fridges back in UK...but I decided to try something new and now I do pipes...and I like it....

I wish you good luck and if I you have any more question I hope I can help you....

Thanks for the answer, Milanuk. Yes i am thinking about this...alot. Weird that they wont have people older than 50, tho... should still have 12-15 years left in me on the road:D. Do you know when they're gonna start hauling the Uranium?
They thought they had to get around 50 rigs to get it done. They have 25 now, so then they will need 25 drivers hehehe.:fingerscrossed:

Milanuk Jun 14th 2013 10:49 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Hi Terry,

I still dont know when we start hauling uranium but they are hardly working on it. As far as I know we should haul it soon. But, we...foreign drivers here...will not haul it until we get Permanent residency and it will take some time. We have about 5 US drivers who can do the job and just 2 or 3 canadians :-) The rest is brits and mexicans :-)
As I know I can probably only haul Uranium in Canada and mustnt cross border to US with it.
But so far no uranium on our trailers :-)

Yes, they want to have 50 trucks but...they found a better way...we have 25 trucks and just a few months ago they advertised for own operators and we already have 7 of them....as I spoke to them Timeline made a good offer for them and they are happy so far....
We all think about buying own trucks later once we get PR...but I am not a dreamer and I know that it is not that easy....but just to tell you...these drivers with own trucks make triple money than me...
And if their truck keeps running with no break downs...they can save most of the money...

A few ex-timeline drivers bought their trucks already....one stayed in Timeline and 2 work for a different company in Calgary...I think they are with Triline....

I also forgot to write you about the night heaters...that you have asked before...
The night heaters in our trucks work well....but we have got a rule that when the temperature drops below -15 C we keep the truck idling all night...becouse we dont want to have flat batteries in the morning :-)
A lot of truck drivers in US and CAnada idle their trucks even when it is not needed...it is sometimes anoying when you park at truck stop and somebody idle his truck all night but I use to pull a fridge so I dont mind :-)

I will never tell anybody to not come over here becouse I think everybody can try it....keep your back door opened just in case if you dont like it here....but we all know one thing....the job is here....

when you do this job for a while...you will meet some other drivers and maybe even owners of other trucking companies.....I met a guy who offered me job in Edmonton for better money and being home every day....
my friend got a job offer in Fort MacMurray for much much better money than he has here......but we can not do anything until we get PR....
but good for us that there are some other oportunities....I didnt have this feeling back in UK....

And one more think....since I work in Timeline....6 or 7 british drivers left back to UK....and 3 of them are back in Timeline again.....two of them who left in January arrived back last week....they are from Southampton area....I asked them why they came back and they said there was not enaugh job....
I wasnt happy to hear it...

So some drivers like it here....some not....some leave and come back again....that is the situation over here now...

Have a good day

Milan

You put up some useful info Milan. Must say you are dead right about the opportunity over here.
I work for Watt & Stewart in Claresholm, who I am finding a good company to work for. Wages about the same as you quote for Timeline. I think we do more oversize than you guys.

Milanuk Jun 14th 2013 11:48 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

alandoug

Hi....Yes I meet a Watt and Stuart trucks very often on the road.
I have read some posts about your company before and I believe you are fine in there.

Yes, you definatelly do more over size :-)
But I dont really mind...I pull load anything they tell me :-)
I have never done flat deck before and this is my first experience....I didnt pull over size yet....but sometimes my collegues do...
Nobody cares what anybody pulls....we just need our miles and we get it :-)

I believe we have similar wages...

Could you just tell me if you have PR already? Somebody told me that Saskatchewan is the best place to get PR but I dont know if I can trust it...
You work in Alberta so you might know something about the PR over there...

alandoug Jun 15th 2013 7:41 am

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

I do not have PR. Alberta seems to be a minefield for PR, a driver at W&S recently got his nomination in 8 days from applying. Though had already done 18 months with the company.
Others really struggle. 2-3 years is not uncommon for the whole process. In Alberta you cannot change employers once nominated, if you do it's back to square one. You must be able to prove a high school education, otherwise you may be asked to take the GED exam. Decisions made concerning this requirement seem to vary a lot. You will have to do the IELTS language test as well.
A friend got his PR in Saskatchewan, he said it was all straight forward. Alberta does seem to be a bloody pain in the ass over PR, but the province does have a huge number of workers on TWPs. As pretty much all employers want a minimum of 6 months service before they'll sign your PR forms, no matter where you go, I'd think long & hard before you leave your present employer.

If PR is your goal, Saskatchewan should be a whole lot easier than Alberta.

Milanuk Jun 15th 2013 2:48 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

I would like to get PR to have a free hands. Once I get it I can do anything and anywhere.
I am in Timeline about 7 months now and last weekend I did the english test. In SK you can do IELT like you said or CELPIP...it is canadian english test...I did CELPIP, it is much easier to book...everything done and paid online. No hassle. And it was even cheaper and there is a shorter waiting time to get on.

My boss is very helpfull and print out all the applications that I have to fill up and even helped me to fill it out.
I think Timeline wants us to have PR to be allowed to pull the uranium. Even Mexicans will apply as well....that is why they are here....they use to work in USA and they told me it is impossible to get any papers in there so they are in Canada now becouse it is easier to get PR....

Somebody told me that Timeline even pay for our PR....I mean the application fee etc....but I didnt ask for that becouse I think everybody can afford it and I dont want to listen in the future that they did this and this for me and I am supose to stay etc...

I know that all of us would like to have PR one day....as I said some of us would like to buy own truck and it is impossible without PR....and I know that one or two drivers would like to move to different province.
And some drivers would like to bring over their families and they need a PR becouse their wife will be allowed to find a job here....

We all dont know what will happened but we keep fighting :-)

I am single with no children so my application should be done faster...I dont know....I am going to apply soon and I will write updates here about that as soon as I know more...
I might even stay in Timeline once I get PR....I like working for them...it seems to me that we can get as much holidays as we want....and it works for me....

Quick point on the wives & the big deciding factor in choosing Alberta for us, is that your spouse gets an open TWP in Alberta as soon as you arrive.

Milanuk Jun 15th 2013 5:56 pm

Re: Working in Timeline logistic, Saskatoon, SK

Yes, that is a good reason. Some of my friends told me about that.
It makes your start easier !

We have one driver whoes wife is here with him and has to wait until he gets PR to get TWP...

Yes, I have driven Oslo - Bergen. Delivered & collected on the west coast. Been up as far as Tromso. Firstly with Nordan, then Norcargo when they were taken over.
The Scanias & Volvos are light years in front of the trucks out here. In every way, especially comfort. Norway is a lovely country with fantastic scenery. Some rough roads, but there plenty of them out here.

You wanna swap jobs? I'm your man!

Things have changed, SK is no longer running that pilot prog - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/occupations.asp

Realistically though, all pilot prog scan be stopped at any time and spouses of truckers aren't entitled to a SOWP, so any family moving needs to be happy with the wife not being able to work until they get PR.

maybe I it is only my feeling but I really feel like that....

Good luck to you all....anywhere you go....I hope you will enjoy Canada like me....[/QUOTE]

REALLY!!!!!... amazed, ive been here nearly 8 years, they are a newish company, and one ex driver told everyone its great.. if you want to live in your truck, never get home, pay wasn't that good for going to the states. doing empty miles and not getting paid for them... I think it all depends on what you willing to "put up with" for the chance of working here, there are a lot of GOOD company's here, just as many bad, and also depends on where you come from, as in what your used to before. I'm pleased you are having a positive experience with them... just saying....

I dont blame you...
but as I said....I am presenting only my opinion.
I believe Timeline is a good start for me.
Yes, we do live in our trucks...but what can you expect when you want to be an international truck driver? Can I expect to be home every weekend?
From Edmonton to Houston it takes about 4 days to get there....

I dont know who you spoke to but I dont know anything about not getting paid for empty miles....I get paid every mile I do 0,43 CAD...I know it is not a lot but I get it paid...loaded or empty...doesnt matter....

As I said....Timeline is not the best company in the world....I just wanted to put some details here for another drivers who are about to find a job in Canada....becouse the more they know...the better decision they can make...that is all....

when I was looking for job in CAnada...I found some usefull details on this forum and now this is my way to pay back....
