Where do i start?

Hello for the first time to everyone......

Here's the thing...... I've been reading many many posts on here  I'm seeing things like pnp and many other things.... skilled semi skilled phew the list goes on... lol
I work for John Raymond right now and i'm really seriously thinking about heading out towards Canada with my other half..... the thing is, where do i start? Who do I speak to first? The other thing is, we're not married although we've been together a number of years..... Would we need to tie the knot? :curse: lol
Any constuctive help would be great....

Cheers.....

Re: Where do i start?

good question, you could do what i and many others have and that is to send a cv off to every company you can find an email address for and await the interest but the down side of that is you'll get so many options as regards companies to work, areas to live etc etc you'll not know what day it is once you've sat for hours pondering which way to go, alternatively you could forget the job for a minute and actually look at where you'd like to live based on property prices, scenic attraction, big city/small town etc and then set your stall out to find a job in that area, which won't be hard as they're desperate for drivers everywhere, but be warned neither ontario or bc have pnp for drivers so you might need to scrub round them. the pnp itself is simple enough if your trade falls under the skilled worker class for a province and you can find a company that has enrolled on the scheme to offer you a job then provided you meet the criteria as regards provable experience etc you can apply for pnp which is basically a short cut to emmigration with the promise of a fast track approach to your application based on the fact you'll not only fill a job vacancy you'll contribute to the community and so on.
theres a minimum amount of cash you need although not a huge sum and you need a clean criminal record for, the last five years, i think.
one thing to deffinately do straight away if your serious is to get those crim checks done(can take upto six weeks) for you and the o/h as any company will want to see those when you apply for a job.
probably missed loads but theres plenty on here with more experience than me who'll fill in the blanks.
hope that helps
paul.

Re: Where do i start?

Cheers Paul....
Was thinking somewhere coastal to move, but would imagine as over here that prices are nice and high...
The hardships of starting out over there are not such a concern for myself, but for my other half...! How long am i likely to be away at any one time, will she have people in the same boat as her, would she be allowed to travel with me if she wanted...? And the main question on my mind after reading your post is, how much money do i need to have? I do own my house and would be willing to sell, but not really had it long enough to make any money on it yet...
So back to my original question.. lol where do i start.... do you have a web address where i can find out about this pnp and where and who has it?

Cheers

Here is where you need to start:
http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Truck_Driving_in_Canada

The east coast provinces (called the Maritimes) of Nova Scotia/New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island all (as far as I'm aware) have PNP for long haul truck driving, you will find that property prices there are quite reasonable too.;)

Check out also for good info on how to go about getting a driving job:

Hey speedy.
You can have a look at my blog if you wanna get an idea of what the actual driving is like.
When you're deciding where you're gonna live, don't forget that you'll be away in the truck for long spells while your mrs will be at home unable to work (probably) so you'll need to be somewhere that she can find things to do. Not speaking from experience, but I have a friend driving in canada who bought a place miles from anywhere and his wifes unhappiness became a huge problem for them. They got through it, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Good luck.

Hi,as i lived in Switzerland i was unable to attend any of these job interviews, just to bloody expensive. So i serched the web and found thousands of truck companies. Simply google :- Manitoba Transport Assoc. There you will find all of there memebers ( with websites)...scroll down the same page and you'll find all of the other Provinces transport Assoc. I sent out over 300 CV'S and had about 100 replies, these i whittled down to 10 or so.Then i checked out there base of opps, what kind of work, area and housing etc. Me i live in Kamloops BC pulling Super 'B's full of fuel working 5 on 3 off. Hope this helps you and any others. Here are a few more websites that i've used.
www.trucking.mb.ca/online.htm with links to all other provinces
www.bctrucking .com
www.canadatransportation.com this covers all provinces
www.fleetdirectory.com this covers all Canada and usa

yeah its just an idea to keep the GF happy... lol thought if.. and i know its a big IF.... if could make it a fact finding trip for 2 months..... Chances are it'll just be a thought.
I'm not too worried about myself in all this because i know i'll survive no matter what, even if the job i land turns out to be a load of :curse:.....!!
What about shipping etc... dont really have much stuff and know i'll have to buy all my electicals again due to the 110 volts, but i've been trying to weigh up the cost of things like furniture.. ship or just buy..?? Back out on the road for 5 days tomorrow anyway so i suppose i'll have time to think but very little contact with the web.... So heres to a few Scotch runs and hopfuly some more great advise when i return...
