HGV, grace period? like car?

HGV, grace period? like car?
dh is a crane driver, has his HGV1. when we go to BC the standard car licence gives you 3 months to pass their test. does he have the same grace period for HGV? that way he can go for the bcas (crane licence) but still work n the meantime as a driver/slinger.
have checked the icbc webby and cant find anything saying their either is or there isn a grace period on which he can use his UK HGV1 licence.
