What is the average time away for the drivers and what is a typical run? I know many people have different expectations and this is one question that everyone asks.

I have been told by Steve Whittaker (H & R Driver ) and also David Foder ( H & R Transport Director) to expect to be away for up to 14 days. When you first start you can take as much time off as you like between runs but remember you are paid by the mile so if the wheels aren't turnin', you aint earnin'.

I was told to expect to do about 10,000 to 12,000 miles per month and if you look on the website it advertises 42c per mile international.

The company hauls reefers and i was told that most of the runs were hauling boxed and palletised frozen beef down to California, Nevada or Arizona. The back haul is normally fruit back up to Canada.

There are also trips around Canada and over the bumps to Vancouver.
Down in the States there are laws against "Interstating" so it looks like its one trip down, one trip up.

Hi lyndon,
This is a great idea here about a thread for H&R and if i get time i think i will start one for Yanke but at the moment i am busy with getting things sorted for my leaving in the very near future. I am also still hoping to start a blog for me and my life with Yanke so anyone can see what to expect.
Anyway great thread and pics too keep it up, you never know might cross paths at some point in the future.
Best of luck,

Thats a good rate for international - alittle more than some people are told they are going to be on.. It seems like a really good company.

Good Luck

Hi Dave

Good to hear from you and great to see you are going for it, we have sold the house and are looking to be over there by the end of this month, hopefully see you over there.

Yes we did go thru VRV, don’t worry, H & R will be paying them, not you.

When you go to the interview, there will most probably be a rep from VRV and a rep from H & R, Annette Kooistra and Steve Whittaker.

Go and enjoy the interview and let us all know how you get on.

If there's anything you need to know please ask.

Lyndon

Interesting Tidbit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 700,000 trucks across Canada, 420,000 of which are used to carry freight commercially. The remainder can be found in the hands of governments, utility companies and farmers, and occasionally haul commercial goods such as machinery and equipment. About 500,000 are straight trucks and the remaining 200,000 are truck tractors

Three-fourths of American communities depend solely on trucking for delivery of goods and services.

Hi,

Can you explain this please....do you mean you can't drop off in Arizona then pick up there and drop off if Texas then pick up there and drop off in California....then back to Canada.

Have I understood this correctly....if so do you know why this is.

Davie,
If your taking a load out of Canada to the USA you MUST after you have delivered that said load take the next one you are loaded with directly back to Canada.
You are NOT allowed to pick up and deliver within continental USA that is called "interstating" and is totally illegal, not only that but you CANNOT even drop your empty trailer, pick up another one and deliver it to some terminal for a load to be taken by someone else!!!!
This is something I think potential drivers don't realise that its not going to be down to the USA and drive about for a week or two "tramping",its down to the USA tip the load,go get loaded again and back to somewhere in Canada!!

In years past it was illegal to do this in Europe it was called cabotage, same sort of thing in the states. Now most of Europe is in the EU you can do it but not outside of it.

Hi Thanks for that mate.

& your right did not know that the way things are put to you sometimes it does look like your driving around "tramping" as you said and then you final oad is back to Canada. Even all the employers I have been in touch with have never mentioned this.

I do presume you can do a triangular journey i.e.

Dep Canada - Texas (drop) - Arizona (pick up) - Canada (drop)

Then after that your free to do another run into the states again - Hence being away for days on end as your run back to Canada could be 1000 miles away from your home depot.

Does That look correct.

(This is why I'm buliding up a list of Q's for employers for when I go over in Sep)

Cheers Dave

PS

Sorry to have hijacked this thread slightly ref H & R wont happen again as I know it can be annoying...still relevant to trucking tho

My name is Lyndon, thats me in the avatar and i am going to be driving OTR (Over The Road) for H & R Transport based in Lethbridge, there is also my wife Janice, my son Luke (13) and our dog Gizmo who is a black Spangador (Spaniel/Labrador cross).

The reason i have introdced the whole family is because when i answer questions, it is usually in relation to our circumstancies, for example if you want to know how much it costs to ship a dog over and i tell you its about £1300 then you know its for our big black bundle of dogginess who weighs in at 27 kilos, if you have a little rat on alead then it wont cost you so much. By the way no offence to owners of liitle dogs, they are lovely, couldnt eat a whole one though !!

We hail from Swindon in Wiltshire and i presently work for Wincanton Chilled in Gloucester, I work nights and the monies pretty good, i say that because i am taking a pay drop (if you think in ££££) so we are not doing it for the money.

We have been planning this since January 2007 when i overheared 2 colleagues talking about it in the Transport Office and thought "Oooo that sounds nice", i came home, we discussed it as a family then decided to do it.

Since then i have spent countless hours trawling the 'net finding answers, made countless phone calls and sent countless emails to countless people in Canada about countless things, to be quite honest it became quite an obsession, but we think its paid off. We managed to get an interview in UK for a Canadian job which was successful and we have also completed all the paperwork for the temp workers permit and put together our immigration folder so we are set to go.

The only thing holding us back was the sale of the house, we are now ready to exchange contracts over the next couple of days and the new people want to be in here on 20th July so i wold say that is about done.

We came over to Alberta in May for a 2 week recce and got most of our new lives sorted out, these included:

Bank Accounts
Schooling
A place to live
Cell phone
Met the new Boss
Home utilities
Food shopping
Furniture shopping
Car shopping

We also visited Calgary and Edmonton as H & R also have depots there and when you join the company you do have the choice which depot you want to work from, we also took around 650 photos of just about everything.

We are no experts and i dont work for the company yet but we do have a "goldmine" of info to share.

My weblog "Trucking Life" logs how the immigration has affected our lives since the middle of Feb.

Fair play to you Lyndon and your family, your research has been good,a lot of Brits stumble with the weather, stay focused and you will suceed,as they say Wincanton=cannotwin.im joining Edge hopefully end of August,i done this all myself,i had a job offer 2 years ago,my girlfriend wouldnt go,so now im off, fully focused,no regrets. i dropped into H&R 4 years ago, just up by Red Dear towards Edmonton.Best Of Luck mate.Phil.

LOAFY...

Is there a set test criteria laid down for a Canadian test.

I am LGV driving instructor qualified thru the military and we do the usual reversing test / uphill start / downhill start / emergency stop etc etc etc.....

But when I have asked any Canadian companies or on some of the other forums (even the ones where the guys have been there for quite a long time) NOBODY answers the question:

I turn up at the designated time and date to take my Canadian Driving test....WHAT WILL I HAVE TO DO?????

All I ever am told is ahh don't worry the company will take you through it
AAAAAAHHHHHHHH

But there must be certain objectives you must pass...aint there???

I know about the airbrake questions but there must be othere things your expected to know and be able to do.

Please Help anyone

Hi Davie,
All i have been told is that you go out with an instructor and it is more like a assement drive as they know you have a LGV class 1 UK licence so they just need to see that you are capable of controlling the vehicle. I have not heard from any of the people i have spoken to that you have to do the reverse test and this was confirmed to me by Chris at Yanke. He did tell me of one guy who on his test the instructor asked him which country he was in and then he realised he was driving up the wrong side of the road, he failed but took his test again and passed no problem. I guess this could be different in other Provinces of course.

I guess this could be different in other Provinces of course.

LOAFY...

Thanks Mate.

What you say does make sense as we already have years of experience driving so I suppose all they really need to know is if you can actually do what you claim to be able to do.

Like when I did my Bus license the examiner asked which one of us were driving instructors and my mate & I said err we both are Jeeze he said right you drive down the road for 20 mins then turn round and you drive back...if you dont hit anything you've passed...best test ever...quality....well it was Northern Ireland....Big Trucks gonna ave a go now...

B4 you do I lived there for 9 years and family still do & I love the place...so let me off the hook BT.

I'll see if I can dig up some of the provincial professional driver handbooks that might be a start.

We're back in Lethbridge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well its all good so far with H & R.

We flew back into Canada today and it looks as though everything they told me was spot on:

They offered me a job
They organised our immigration paperwork (& paid for it)
They organised and paid for my flight over here
They picked us up from the airport.
They put us in a hotel
Tomorrow we are being collected from the hotel to go and sort out all the medicals, social security numbers and medicare.

So far we are very happy teddies

Hi Lyndon & family,
Glad you got there ok and everything is as you expected it to be. Hope you dont suffer with the jet lag like you had last time and all goes well over the next week or so.
Lot of talk on here about the training and what you do on the test so you will have to keep us up to speed there my friend.

Anyway all the best for the future for you and your family with the new life in Lethbridge and Canada on the greater scale.

Davie,
Yes that route would be legal but you might be driving empty for a couple of days between loads!!!
As for the truck driving test if its anything like the CDL test in the States it will be just about the easiest test ever:
Went to test centre, took the multi choice theory test then took the truck and hopperbottom trailer out for a 25min spin around Grand Forks N.Dakota after 45 mins had my class A CDL with hazmat, airbrake and double/triple trailers!!!!!

LOAFY...

Hi Loafy

its now 05:15 Monday morning and i've been up since 03:00 again so yes, it looks like the old jet lag kicked in again.

As for the procedures to go thru, i intend updating every couple of days so i will keep everyone informed.

One thing i didnt mention was the immigration process, its different to what i expected. When we landed at Calgary we went through the 1st passport check and told them there that we intended to apply for the Temp Work Permit and they filtered us off into the immigration dept. I was expecting to go into a room and to be interviewed but its just a row of counters like at the post office. We went thru and got processed in about 15 mins and no stress. Jan and i are both on the same permit and Luke has got his own education permit which allows him to study anywhere.

We told them that we had goods to follow and the dog coming over in 2 weeks so thats no problem. With our goods to follow we didnt have much so we went into Staples last week and used 2 of their XXL air freight boxes for £114 each, they are already here waiting for us at the Lethbridge depot so i will collect them tonight.

The rest of our belongings went in the suitcases and yes they were heavy, i was told at Manchester that i would have to pay the excess which i was expecting to do anyway. Well at the check-in the girl got confused and called the supervisor to help, they started arguing about the price in front of us and i think the supervisor got embarrassed coz she said we could just go and they would sort it out. Well we just grabbed our things and ran before they changed their minds.

I really do like getting things for free

Well its now 05:36 and its just getting light in Lethbridge, did i mention that it hit 40 C yesterday. Time to grab a shower and go down for a bite of breakfast courtesy of H & R

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings folks but those of you who are thinking of going with H+R need to check out the posts of "can pilot" over on the ex-pats forum at www.truckersworld.co.uk
He drives for them and says around 30 European drivers have left in the last 2/3 months because of no work and low pay!!!!

Hi Big Truck

I read all his posts, looked at his profile and noticed the people he was talking to. All good stuff but im not wobbling just yet, heared it all before about all the companies ive ever worked for, and not just trucking ones neither.

I am meeting the Boss injust over an hour so ive got an open mind. My attitude is......to make things work..... you have to make things work.

Heres looking at the bright side

Lyndon.

Steve,

Thanks for that I have saved it to my PC in work to print off as and when required as we have a mammoth colour printer in the office. Will wait till on duty one night to print it as it will be like printing the dead sea scrolls.

It may well be "Cock+bull" but why would two guy's who drive for H+R come and post on a forum and spoof, what possible motive would they have?
One says he has taken home approx $830/week since 1/1/07 for and I quote "working my nuts off"
They say your are left waiting on a load 1000 miles away from the family for 2 days at a time with no pay frequently and that would be a killer for me.
These trucking companies keep coming back to the UK looking for drivers NOT because they have increased the number of trucks they run but because they have a DRIVER TURNOVER of 100% or more!!!!!!!

I agree 100% big truck, theres a reason why the big companys keep goin to the uk for drivers, Its because they cant get the residents to work for them, because there not very good compared to others out here. Having been here for 3 years and know alot of other drivers who have also, there is not many uk drivers who stay at the big companys who bring them over.I have been looking around for a couple of days now to try and find a decent paying job and theres not alot about, the money ranges from $14 an hour to $17 for local work and for working away for a couple of weeks your take home pay is around $1200-$2000 all depending how hard you wanna go(per fortnight). Where not trying to worry anyone but just tryin to get you prepared for the way they work here compared to the uk. just a little friendly advice...chris

Hi mickp, we are living in saskatoon, it all depends on what miortgage you have and where you live, to get a decent house now in saskatoon or outlying areas you prob want around $300 000, if you get around a $150 000 mortgage your bills will be around $2000 a month and thats not with the shopping or fuel, its not as cheap to live in canada as everyone thinks its prob on par with the uk, were on a acreage so our water bill is around $16 a month were as in martensville we were paying $100 a month. Our house taxes in martensville were over $4000 a year were as here there only $1400 so it all depends were you live and what you live in. The food is pretty expensive compared to uk but eating out is cheaper. When we first came out we all bought big nice houses and on the wages we were earning it was a struggle to keep our heads above water and most of the other drivers were the same. The english money you come with dont last forever and when your earning the dollar it does get harder. Alot of our friends went back because they coulnd'nt afford to stop here on the wages. But in the end it as been worth the struggle.the propertys here have shot up in the last year so it would be even harder if we came over now.

Well i have to say that would be right on the first part why would they, we all know that its not always for everyone and as bob the dog has wrote more than once you do have to put in the effort to make it work, it's not going to without it. As for the pay $830 a week minus his taxes take home would be around the $4000 a month topline so not bad money and at the end of the year he can get a good chunk of that back, anything between $4000 and $7000 which is nice for a holiday or put towards a car or something special. H&R pay for layovers after 24Hrs and if i was told right this is being looked into at this moment to bring that down and then split into equal times to make it fair.
I dont know what there turn over of drivers would be but if it was that bad im sure the the PNP or im not sure of the wording but HRSDC i think its called should know and act on it to improve things, then again if no one tells them it wont change.
I guess i will soon find out and if it is true you will hear from me on here and im sure Lyndon too and others.
Many thanks,

$830 per week times 4 weeks per month only comes to $3320 gross, so I'm not entirely sure how you are getting it to $4000 after taxes (net).

I mean $830 a week take home after taxes, so this should be around $4000 a month or around a $1000 a week gross wouldnt you say, i am not to sure of what the taxes are so really only guessing Steve.

Aahh that makes a little more sense.

A good yardstick for total deductions taxes, unemployment insurance, Canada Pension Plan, Health care deductions etc is to take about 30%-33% off the gross amount.

So with a gross of $4000, take home would be closer to $2700 per month or $675 per week.

Cheers
Steve

Reality Check

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay i apologise for interupting the speculating with a few real hard facts, if anyones interested, here's how the first day went.

Had breakfast (scrambled eggs on toasted sour dough)
Met with Transport Director in Hotel Lobby.
Went to head office to fill in forms.
Went to hospital to be drug tested (taking the P155)
Did Truck licence medical & eye sight test.
Obtained SIN number.
Visited the bank
Got stood down
Bought 2x beds, 2x sofas, washer & dryer and a dining table.
Ate KFC bargain bucket with side of gravy.
Drank 2x cans of Molson (335 ml )
Wrote this
All in all a good day !!!

Hi Iain

Stood down is a military slang, its the same as knocking off, chipping or clocking out. Finishing ones work for the day, can be applied to every day except for friday when the official term is "POETS" day, Piss Off Early Tomorrows Saturday.

As for the doom sayers, they may be right or they may be wrong, they may be justified or they may just be whinging failures that are trying to find a scapegoat for their own failings in life, who knows, and its not for me to judge.

What i will say is that my eyes and ears are open but my bullshit filters are on standby, as is normal.

What i will say to anyone who reads my ramblings either here or on my blog is that i try not to assume, i just report facts.

And also remember, Lyndon's glass is always half full, never half empty, believe and it will happen.

Lyndon

EDIT: found the cure for jet lag, is called Molson and it comes in a can.

2nd EDIT: Doom sayers have their place in this thread too, i just wish they would speak from experience instead of just quoing what a friend of theirs thought they heared.

Live it before you criticize it

"Doomsayer" or not I'm quoting from not one but Two H+R drivers who have
been over there "on the job" for slightly more than a couple of days!!!
Do you think $830 take home/week is decent money for working 13 hours/day for several days at a time and away from the family?!!!!!!
Have you enquired with the "transport director" if its true that 35 European drivers have left H+R and went to "CANEX" in the last two months or are these guy's just talking out their arse's for the fun of it?

Hi Lydon, if any of the whinging or failure is aimed at me, I dont think so! I am stating facts as we are still here and enjoying life,I have drove for 3 years out here, I was 1 of the 1st to come ,so yes I know a little of what I'm talking about. For the wages If you make $4000 a month your take home will be around $1400 a fortnight. As I have stated before I am not tryin to put anyone off but just trying to let them know that its not all roses out here whilst your waitin the 2 years for your landed status, I wish someone would have told me how it really was instead of the bullshit that the companys told us, I would have still came but perhaps a little more prepared. We have no intentions on goin back to the uk and have done very well out here property wise, making more in 1 year than we could have made in 10 in the uk.

Hi julieandchris,
I dont think Lyndon was meaning anyone in particular just ramdomly saying that yes people do fail for whatever reasons and yes i think some of the firms should say how it is for real but like you say and me myself you have to put some effort in to get something back, those who go thinking it will be a breeze should think again, I know you have been out there a long time and have had your probs but you worked thru them and made your dream come true no.
Lets face it if i got paid £415 pound a week take home to drive down the highway and deliver a load and see everything on the way its a bonus, you definitely wont get that in the UK. Plus the average trucker in the UK is only taking home between £21k and £26k per annum so if your going for the money which is half the arguements on here as most agree to disagree on that one i would stay here if i was them.
I have said in another thread that this type of work is not a career its a vocation in life, you like it or you dont.

hmmm

i highlighted some bits from your quote so im not really sure why you thought my litle rant was aimed at you, actually its people like you that i want to talk to and to get on this thread. It looks as though you have done what i am trying to do.

I know i have just got over here and i know ive just started with the company but what i am looking for is answers. i know a lot of people are unhappy over here, it wasnt what they expected or they got stitched up.

i think i am pretty level headed about this and it has been thought thru pretty well but all the same a few things have still surprised me.

What i intend to do is go thru the training and get on the road and at the same time keep a record on here and on my blog about whats really happening in real time, also answering questions along the way as we go. That way there will be a place for people to read about cold hard facts. (as i see them anyways

Hope this will help.

Lyndon

EDIT: Thanks Davie_Mac, location changed, Lyndon from Lethbridge it is.

EDIT part deux: I know Iain i just realised, looks like we are cross posting

The point with canada is you have to try it its completely different then the uk i cant wait to get over there me and family got back to uk this morning and i am now depressed since i got of the plane uk sucks,

I everyone is friendly and speaks to each other not like the uk you can go in a truckers cafe and everyone is laughing and talking,

the country is so clean and nice even the toilets are spotless clean where ever you go,

Let me get back to canada as soon as possible

Have been away with my son's racing for the last couple of days, so don't know whats been going on, on here. But was shocked to see that valuable information from Trucking post's had gone or been locked.

Thankyou Lyndon for the H&R thread, I have honestly found out more information in the last couple of weeks than the last few months of research.
I didn't know there was a "karma" thing, but now can't see the add button under Lyndon's name?

Also thankyou to all the other people who have answered my questions on previous Trucking threads. Your help and advice has been greatly appreciated, and is nice to know the majority of people have actual experience of working in, or moving to Canada (not USA ect.....)
