Re: H+R
Lol, never hated anyone in my life, just pissed off that the ones who were singing the praises of H&R for so long have been dropping like flies and returning to the UK after encouraging MANY families to join them in the dream... BUT staying quiet when it's gone sour!
At least one family were typical of the ones that gremmie purports to dislike so much, the ones who run up debts in Canada then do a moonlight flit back to the UK.

Trying not to sound quite a cynical as Gremmie, but the ones that over spent and ran up debts here lived in the same financial state before coming to Canada.
Slightly off topic, but have been watching Sky news coverage of the riots in London and Brum, that country is well and truly down the toilet, army should be sent in before it spreads any further.

Thing is you try to give all the advice you can to new families coming over and none of them listen , They go out buy two newish cars , fancy house with all the mod cons and basically want what everyone else as acquired , But everyone else as been here for a few years not a few weeks ! They wont sacrifice anything , They want it all NOW .
What part of " tempoary work permit " do they not understand ?
A lot of it is because they want the bragging rights to prove to people back home that they have done the right thing , When really they are trying to convince themselves they have made the right move .
And yes I have convinced a couple of families NOT to go to H&R , Up to a month away at a time then 2 days off and back out again and all for $1500/1600 biweekly With a family its a recipe for disaster IMO
Although there are some that have achieved PR this way and but at what cost ?

Re: H+R
And that, Kevin, is the real heart of it, isn't it.
We all want nice things. I know that I wouldn't mind a boat, and I would like a motorcycle, and I would quite like a Dodge Viper, but to what ends? I could go get a new car if I chose, but I see no point. I have the Buick, old but bulletproof, and the Explorer (which was my wifes car), and I see no reason to move either one on. So a new car would be a fanciful waste for me.
I got the flatscreen TV at Christmas. I had the money so I bought it. And I only got a 40" because anything larger would be too large for the room.
But again, I have also seen people arrive and spend everything as if it were a vacation they had saved hard for. They treat their lifetimes worth of work as holiday money, then realise that the 3000 sq ft house has property taxes that are sky high, and that the upkeep is more than they can handle. If I am asked, and I have been by many, I always suggest they keep a percentage of their money in the bank for a few years and get a mortgage for their home. That way, they always have a cushion and can plan around any problems.
I have my little house. It is big enough for us. It costs a lot of money but it is worth every penny to me. I have enough toys to keep me amused. My old ATV is still going despite trying to murder me. The firearms collection continues to grow. The maintenance side of that is also a growing investment. I have enough time to enjoy what I have now I am on day work, and every weekend free as well and I still have plenty to keep me amused..
So a word to the wise.. The days are no longer here- still 24 hours. Build your inventory with that in mind.

Not yet. They are on backorder and I am told they are fairly worn out.
I did pick up a really nice 243 Savage for my boy and ladyfriend to shoot, and an exceptional Winchester Model 70 in 270 for myself. Not into Magnums really. If you misjudge with a heavy calibre you can hurt yourself and then you develop a flinch. One person I knew cut his eye on the scope through not shooting right, but I think it must have been his first time with a real gun.
Point I was making is that most hobbies people enjoy in the UK can be expanded on here without big expense. I reload my own cartridges here for less than half the cost in the UK and a quarter the cost of new shells so it is cheap, keeps me amused and is something I enjoy and can do whenever I want.

You reckon?
I hope so, I really do. Like I say, we shall have to see.
