Default Are you enjoying American society?

Big question, I guess.

But I'm developing a dislike of many aspects, I'm starting to think about moving away; preferably back to the friendly Asia where I worked before coming here.

I would imagine it would be hard in an area with no alternatives. But the place is big enough for me to find most points of view, even if they are not the norm.

Where are you, and what aspects are causing you discomfort?

The US is a big place. I'm located in an area where I feel comfortable and there are many like-minded individuals. I have visited enough places in the US to know exactly where I would - and wouldn't- reside.

Society? I like this definition, that I googled:

a highly structured system of human organization for large-scale community living that normally furnishes protection, continuity, security, and a national identity for its members:

So my answer is YES, I enjoy it, but it could be better. Most other places seem to be worse.

Materialism, gun culture, religious bigotry, winner vs loser - just a few things distorting my view at the moment

Guns are a pain, I want a Ruger Precision in 308, but sounds like not before the end of the year. Thank you Obama.

I have had no issues with religion.

Other issues are similar in UK.

Raleigh area not agreeing with you anymore

Perhaps it has to do with the sort or people you hang out with or work with.

Depends where in the U.S. you live, I suppose. Up here in small town New York State, there's plenty of religion but I don't detect much bigotry associated with it. Folks tend to be Presbyterian, catholic, episcopalian, UU ... so no born again, mega church kind of vibe with it ... politics is odd up here, they tend to be registered republicans but actually vote democratic. Guns, mostly used for hunting I believe. The two high profile murders in town in recent years involved one person beaten to death and one knifed to death. The guy with the knife had to be shot, and according to the police chief, that was the first time a police officer had fired a gun on duty since the 1940s.

Having lived in 10 different states in 37 years here, and having no intention of going back, I enjoy it here. I like some areas more than others, which is not unusual.

I'm in the heart of the Baptist bible-bashing, Republican-voting ,2nd Amendment ,people-of-Walmart, Redneckland.....
My large house on an acre of land with a nice pool cost me half of what my 1-bedroom maisonette in Surrey cost...
It's peaceful, the weather's fantastic we get all kinds of wildlife, never had a parking problem in my 9 years here...
Just a few minutes away from the mountains, and 20 minutes away from every store you could ever want...
Ohhh....We never discuss politics or religion with the locals, who, incidentally are amazingly friendly and polite...(I love all the ma'am and sir stuff, even like being called Miss Sue)
I qualify for Medicare in a few months....
What's not to enjoy??

This. Life can be as stressful and irritating as you allow it to become.

Religion is everywhere in my neck of the woods, but the religious wingnuts don't bother me, and I don't bother them. Result: zero stress caused by religion. My relationship with the "gun lobby", is similar. I can't do anything about either, not that I necessarily want to, so I don't worry about them.

If you can't find friends and a good life in North Carolina, there must be something wrong with you.
